I think what you are saying is exactly what needs to happen. At least, two of Boyle, Pyatt, Asham and Powe need to be gone, if not more. You then need to replace some of those guys with cheaper organizational assets, which will free up a little space. Also, of the prospects you mention, you have to begin to wonder how much longer Christian Thomas will be with the organization. There are several guys that appear to be in front of him, and what does it say about how Rangers view him that they are about to sign Mats Zucarello to a multi-year deal?

There are some guys that the Rangers have in the system that are good players, but just are too low on the organizational depth charts to ever really get a shot with the Rangers. Those guys could arguably be moved for picks in this year's or next year's draft, so that the Ranger can better distribute the age of their prospects -- i.e., we need more guys in the 18-19 year old Rangers, and we are too heavy in the 21-22 year old ranges.

last year was Thomas first pro year, but yeah, he needs to take strides this year for sure.

I'm not really criticizing the player, I am wondering whether he has a spot in the organization -- with Kreider and Miller the two best prospects at forward, and Lindberg and Fast arguably having passed Thomas. You have a bit of a log jam of kids trying to break in the league, so are the Rangers better off moving one of them.

it's pretty likely that Callahan and Hagelin are going to miss the first part of the season, so these young guys will have more of a chance than ever to show what they got in camp and in pre-season.

Gonna be interesting for sure. But I think the sentiment that the holes we have are likely to be fulfilled from within is dead on.

Are Hags and Cally really likely to miss time at the beginning of next year? Long recovery period for that injury, I guess.

it was stated 4-5 month recovery for both...that seems to be right when season starts, so just remains to be seen how quick they can get healthy and get in game shape.

I have a feeling Hagelin won't be signing any new deal until he is healthy. There is just no need to have his next contract on the salary cap until he is ready.

In the Ottawa Sun, Bruce Garrioch writes that the Rangers are quietly shopping JT Miller to see if they can get some established players before Sunday’s draft.

He writes that in the 26 games that Miller played for the Rangers this season he “didn’t live up to expectations.”

This past season, Miller, 20, played for the Whale, the Rangers and won a gold medal for Team USA at the World Juniors.

Miller had 23 points in 42 games for the Whale, four points in 26 games for the Rangers and 9 points in 7 games for Team USA.

Back from a brief (typical BS) ban, but on Richards, I hate the move, but its done, gotta get behind the (frank)er. The upside is he should be VERY motivated to get his career back on track, sounds like he is.

Not a good business decision.

Too much risk when compared to the reward(s); which is virtually none.

I would have been happy with Stepan, Brassard, Miller, and Boyle down the middle.

Sign Matt Hendricks and trade Staal to Caroline for Skinner. No tender for Sauer ( ) and rethink this decision.

Sather..,

I also like the idea that you guys brought up of getting rid of the gobbily goop guys like Asham, Pyatt, Powe, freeing up a few million & really letting the young crop of kids we got try & fill some of those bottom 6 roles.

I meant to add Boyle's name to the list of the goop.

I think Del Zotto is a bigger asset than Staal right now. He is cheaper, he won't become a UFA in two years, and he doesn't have health issues. The Rangers need to keep their bargain contract guys right now, and Del Zotto is one if them. That deal just simply isn't worth it.

a first round pick in a really deep draft which gives us a chance to draft mantha plus colborne who has huge upside but just has to get a chance, and we have moore now who replaces DZ i think

I am NOT one of the many Del Zotto haters, yes he took a step back last yr, but again, his age for a D man with his skills, could be too risky dealing him. But I understand Moore makes him expendable.

which is why we need to make that trade if they offer up a first and a very very good prospect

What if Staal isn't right? Then you go into the season with Mac, Girardi, Moore, Stralman and ... You comfortable with that? And with DZ's salary level, you won't be able to find a suitable replacement in the market. Not to mention, Moore was a healthy scratch for the Jackets last year. I really like the kid, but he will have his struggles just like any young defensemen. And then the fanbase will get on him.

And Mantha is a bit of a dog. A talented one, but a dog nonetheless.
