this is what Steve Zipay wrote about the decision to keep Richards:
The text from the Rangers really surprised me, although some people had a gut feeling that Brad Richards wouldn't go anywhere in 2013-14.
It read: "The Rangers will not be using our one remaining compliance buyout during this offseason."
In other words, Richards, coming off the worst campaign of his career, and his $9 million salary and $6.7 million cap hit will be with the club in September with an opportunity to rebound.
He still can be bought out next year IF he isn't injured. That would make him ineligible for the amnesty buyout.
But is that too late? How can Richards possibly meet expectations, especially after his disappointing showing last season? A Cup Final? To me, it's short-sighted.
Pressure? Sure, he's proud and dedicated and wants to win and prove he deserves to be a No. 1 center and that the half-season was an abberration. Problem is, he was so awful that his long-time coach demoted him to the fourth line before finally benching him in the playoffs.
From what I saw, I didn't think Richards had much left in the tank either. If you watched the games, No. 19 looked slow physically and mentally at times.
Oh well, he'll still collect 2/3rds of what's remaining on his $60 million contract next summer if all goes well.
And the Rangers, now handcuffed to a large extent with only about $12 million to spend under the cap on restricted free agents like Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan, will presumably sent out basically the same team that won one round in the playoffs this spring: thanks to two shutouts by Henrik Lundqvist.
And let's not forget that Ryan Callahan and Carl Hagelin will miss camp and maybe the beginning of the season.
Unless Sather has something up his sleeve trade-wise (Del Zotto) , or that he believes in his up and coming youngsters: Miller, Lindberg, Fast....
Fans have to hope that Alain Vigneault gets a little more out of Richards, whom Vigneault called "an outstanding individual" during his introduction to the media, and the Blueshirts, than John Tortorella. Especially in May and June. |

use the youth and have a good year buy out richards and add a good player next year and be a real contender then |

what scares me is that there truly were times, many times, where Richards looked completely done, as Zipay states here.
he couldn't win any faceoffs in the games he suited up for in the playoffs, Bergeron actually made him look silly, he looked slow, and he just looked old.
he is not a 6.67 million dollar player anymore. The Rangers had an opportunity to fix that problem without a penalty by simply writing a check, and decided not to do it.
It's actually a worse decision the more I think about it. |

let's than hope it does not take 60 games to scratch him and use miller on his spot if he really is done, if we trade DZ for something like i mentioned earlier that fits our cap and resign clowe we'll be good even with richards cap hit, i actually don't believe he can have a huge rebound year, he looked done to me
if ,and thats a big if, we make that DZ for colborne and #21 pick our roster for next year if richards sucks would come down to:
kreider-stepan-cally
clowe-brassard-nash
hagelin-miller-colborne
jean(or other cheap call up)-boyle-dorsett
Mcd-girardi
moore-staal
mcilrath-stralman
hank
biron
draft mantha with the pick and he replaces clowe in a couple of years when his contract is up, its doable with the cap (colborne is only 1,1mil) if we trade pyatt, asham and powe for picks or prospects
will never happen but you can always dream |

Clearly, a completely unsupportable decision. For an organization who has always shown a willingness to take the aggressive route pursuing FA's and then admitting their mistake when the player didn't work out, this is an abombination. You can almost say, "we'll, Callahan and Hagelin will be out for the 1st part of the season, so what the hell, let's keep Richards and get something for our money". This reminds me of a remark the late thoughtless former Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott said about pitcher John Denney, who she signed to a huge contract, only to have him injured soon after the season began, she asked "can't he do some garden work". If I'm rival GM, I see blood in the water, and I would preparing a very attractive offer sheet for McDonagh or Stepan. What's Sather gonna do? Match at all cost? Can he?
With the realignment, the Red Wings now in the east, the Islanders, Senators and Jets on the upside, the Rangers as currently constructed will be extremely lucky to make the playoffs this season. I'm sure there will be those who tell me it won't be that bad, and who knows maybe it won't. In the end,we can all take comfort in the fact that opening night at the garden soon after the puck drops, we'll all hear the familiar refrain "Potvin sucks" all will be good with the sold out crowd. |

Was Richards first season as a Ranger so spectacular? Even if he duplicates that is it worthy of his cap hit? |

In the Ottawa Sun, Bruce Garrioch writes that the Rangers are quietly shopping JT Miller to see if they can get some established players before Sunday’s draft.
He writes that in the 26 games that Miller played for the Rangers this season he “didn’t live up to expectations.”
This past season, Miller, 20, played for the Whale, the Rangers and won a gold medal for Team USA at the World Juniors.
Miller had 23 points in 42 games for the Whale, four points in 26 games for the Rangers and 9 points in 7 games for Team USA. - jimbro83

Even if he wins MVP next season he still has to be bought out. The only possible way I can live with this move is if the Rangers win the cup. The roster wasn't good enough last year, and now they don't have the funds to make improvements. Why it doesn't make sense to me. The cap penalties could destroy this franchise in a few years. |

in games two and three vs Washington, Brad Richards was a combined 8-21 on faceoffs.
I am sure he'll regain quickness in the faceoff circle another year older. #Sarcasm |

It's not just the cap hit for this season. The cap penalties in 5-6 years could be devastating. |

Skinner is a contributor today and young. The contract is a bit risky though. How about this: Staal and Pyatt for Skinner and McBain? Two health risks, a guy with some offensive upside from the blue line to fill Staal's void and Pyatt going the other way to offset some of the money. - gkmkiller
Why on earth would they want Pyatt?

This board went from optimism to shear mob scene, thanks Sather
Unless thy get Hank to sign really soon this season is going to be a mess, the bottom six aside from Dorsett and the possibility of Miller,Lindberg and Fast is awful, Pyatt and Asham are untradable dead weight, Boyle is maybe tradable but who wants a 6'7" forward who has the strength of a player thats 5'7"
Really looking bleek going into the draft, I hope Sather has something up his sleeve, trading Miller better not be it - cranford93
I think Boyle is fine on the 4th line w/ asham and dorsett. Just don't play him all the time A la torts. Put some kids on the 3rd line, we've got 3 centers -we'll
Be OK. |

This season did just become a cup or bust year. Anything less is unacceptable with the risk they are taking. |

It is a crazy unacceptable risk, but I'm bit going to blame Richards for it. All he can do is go score 75 points. He can't make organizational decisions.
This team with some small tweeks can win. |
