Buying him out makes sense on a couple of levels.

1) No re-capture to worry about.
2) No salary coming back, so $5.3MM in extra cap space to work with.

With the market stagnant, this just seems like the best way to get the headache over with.

Well boys...this could either be the most exciting 48 hours in Canuck land in a long time, or it could be a dud. Fasten your seatbelts. Is it 4:20 yet?

I agree I just really hate seeing them let him go for nothing. In saying that it does free up cap space. We will have to see what happens over the next few days.

It sure has the feeling of being a dud. But the funny thing is that usually the quiet teams make the most noise....And I have heard very few Canuck related rumors.

That is sad to see, all because of the new CBA (and a few other internal reasons) with it's flawed rules punishing previously legal contracts. I'm shocked that ever went through, but hockey needed to start.
- Kwak250

It went through cause Bettman pushed through his personal vendetta, Jacobs wanted it cause it punished other teams, and the PA wasn't going to fight against it because it didn't affect them.

So instead of a "reset" it's more of a "refresh"?

I think you're right...it's so tough to move players this summer.

- djamon

Could still be a reset with Torts, a Luongo trade and 1 other big trade.

I don't think Ballard will be bought out I think he would do well under Torts. Only problem is Torts don't like mistakes and Ballard is bound to make a few but I think he can learn with the proper guidance. Being put in the press box over Alberts and Barker is a joke. Thanks again AV for the great leadership. So thankful we are not dealing with that sh!t anymore.
- thundachunk

You have to give Booth and Ballard another year under a new coach. Hopefully an injury free one for both guys. Unless Ballard goes as part of a trade which I doubt.

Would you have traded Luongo for Lecavalier?
Buy out Luongo and sign Vinny... Same thing... Not like we care about the Canucks buy out money.

I personally would like to see something with the islanders done where we get RD + and then buy him out.

To be fair, had Gillis thought about it, he would've moved Luongo when he could For anything, anything at all. Save some face and blame the new CBA. As much as people hate Burke, hate his arrogance and loud mouth, he was a clever guy. Used his knowledge and experienced and set the team up to be fine when the impending CBA came to renewal. Didn't sign long term deals, though we lost out on a few players. Obviously he thought he'd be in charge at the time (I imagine he would've thrived in this period). Gillis, really only has himself to blame.

I'm not going to say I was on board the whole time because I mostly believed that we could have gotten return product before the trade dead line but after nothing happened amongst other enlightening info coming to light I realized that the best thing for both sides of this situation was a buyout. I don't like it but I did not create it so f@ck it its gonna happen.

I think I would have done Luongo for Lecavaier I think it would have helped both teams. Lecavaier as a #2 center and Kesler as #3 would be ideal.

Having said that I like the islanders deal better. I read today that there was discussion of Luongo for RD straight up now that I don't like but if a pick or prospect came back now that's a different story

I have no problem with that. One of my biggest issues with AV was Ballard. I have nothing but praise for him in certain areas of his game and the areas that need work he wasn't given a chance to improve. As for Booth I truly haven't seen enough of him to make a fair assessment. I will say Booth has to prove something if not he should be moved.

With Ballard I do question intelligence though. How the hell do you 2 hand slash your own goalie across the face?? Like come on how the hell does that even happen?

Use the buy out on Luongo this season and give those guys a chance under a new coach. I really like how Ballard plays with Tanev and Booth has shown flashes. and I think under a new coach these guys may flourish. The cap is going to go up next year so give these guys a opportunity.

They are NOW contemplating a buyout? They've been trying to move Luongo for a very long time, I'm pretty sure the buyout option has already been contemplated in case they can't trade him.

Quick question for you guys:

Does anyone here believe that the Canucks will actually be able to trade Luongo?

- MBFlyerfan

No, he'll be bought out, or put on waivers. Canucks wont get anything for him.

We couldn't fit Vinny in our cap at $7.7 M. Pointless trade.

They can keep Ballard if they trade another D, otherwise he has to go for cap reasons. Booth stays unless they pick up someone like Vinny.

Yes they do need a 4th line........ and a 2/3 of 3rd line and for that matter a 2nd line winger but do you resign Lapierre or go after a guy like Dustin Penner (Yikes) for a third line option. I don't know I just don't see a lot of UFA's that would improve the Canucks that come at a reasonable price. I think at the end of the day they need to bight the bullet and trade a piece or two of the core.
- robpat

We have 2/3 of a 3rd line. Hansen and Higgins. Still need a centre.
