"We've got some holes to fill on both sides," Devine said. "In the past year, two or three years, our defensive depth on the back end has been very good. So we're really going into a draft where it's a tossup between the forwards and defense, at least for the first pick -- and the second pick, maybe even the goaltending comes into it."

This was Devine's comments when asked about the draft this weekend...

nope Vanek missed 10 games.
- JVince11

Then he had 6 games without Vanek in which he was scoreless or 60% of the time.

can we get myers to work out with Gary Roberts?

he needs to learn how not to fall..

- SabresFaninIndiana

If I were Pegula,
I'd hire Roberts to run the offseason training program for all the young kids!
Guys that work out w him show year to year improvement
Whatever he does works

I'd be totally ok with D at 8 and Fucale at 16....if Miller, Vanek and/or Stafford net the Sabres 1 or more 1st round picks this year AND 1 or more top 6 fwd prospects (Strome, Nino, etc.)

Cannot trade Vanek without securing at least one top line all star caliber (potential) forward. Simply cannot. Trading Vanek only to go from one star forward to zero would be a tough pill to swallow.

IMO it's still a small sample size to really know. I would like Vanek to stay but I just don't see it happening anymore

I really hope we dont take Fucale in the first round. The draft is so deep that to spend a high pick on something we dont really need seems like a waste.

well if the Vanek lovers can say that he was a PPG player even though he scored 28 points in his first like 11 games and then only 17 the rest of the season then don't attack Hodgson for his numbers..

thats not fair..

True
Mostly bc he has commitments to other players
And this way he can't get fired

But if Pegula allows him to work with them on the side till their done,
And gives him enough $$$, then maybe?

It would be awesome

Counting the one game the season before Vanek missed, it's 7 of 11 games scoreless. While it is still a small sample size it is a tad concerning.

That is why I came up with the Heatley ++ for Vanek (eating a portion of his caphit/salary) scenario.

Heatley is still capable of scoring 25-30 goals in this league.

Well that's just like your opinion man. I'm not going to pretend to be able to evaluate goalies (who are the least predictable prospects) but I do know that the Sabres don't have a sure fire successor to Miller in the pipeline, so I would understand the logic behind the pick. Forwards are fun and exciting to draft, but, when you are where the Sabres are, you pick the highest guy on your board every pick. Even if that's D at 8 and D at 16. Load up on talent.

At least he is working over the summer, compared to pigging out.
