Where was he when Boston scored 3 straight to tie it? He couldn't do his job and we lost because of it. His play in that 11 mins to me justifies all the hate he is receiving. |

I don't agree with the hate, young guys love playing with Dion because they know he will be there for them. He was slow as dirt in his first year, since training with Roberts however he has fixed to an acceptable level. No one throws hits like him and he eats minutes. Just get another top.D man... Gunnerson is a.compliment guy, not a top liner. Dion has yet to have a legitimate partner in T.O. - Jay Uller
bingo
he makes his bonehead plays no doubt. but for 25 or 26 of the 27 minutes he's out there. he's doing a lot of the little things right that he gets no credit for.
as for qb'ing the powerplay... he's awful, telegraphs his passes on the breakout and always misses the first pass.. carries it too long and the forwards end up standing still on the far blue line. that being said, gardiner qb. one timer to dion doesn't sound so bad if he can hit the net |

No, no and no.
Phaneuf does well in his own zone, better than all three you mentioned. Phaneuf is a good defenseman, and was our best last year. Regardless of his C and contract. - systemtool
Phaneuf is a joke in his own zone. for a big physical defensemen he sure plays soft. Don't know if he was tired from playing that much but if that's the case he wasn't in good enough shape.
And all four of 3 of those guys would have at least tried to clear the net. |

have to disagree here
one of the things I give him the most credit for is his play in the corners. for most of that series he physically handles lucic down low. he battles hard in the corners |

That, or the people making some of these statements are either clueless or just idiots. - systemtool
My biggest concern about Phaneuf is what the hell do you do with him when the contract expires. He isn't worth what he is being paid and he might hold out for a raise.
So I don't think moving him is necessarily bad, so you aren't faced with having to keep him at the trade deadline because the team is in playoff contention.

The same place the rest of the team was, and the same place he was when the Leafs were minutes away from eliminating the Bruins.
But you're right, Dion sucks because the Leafs didnt win the Cup and beat the Bruins in 4 like they should have and were expected to. |

But he doesn't do a lot of little things right, he makes too many horrible decisions to be playing as much as he is, he just isn't good enough defensively.
I like his shot, and he can hit real hard but he just isn't good enough.
He's not our guy if we want the cup. |

Letang wants close to 9M.
IF that;s the defenseman market, Phaneuf is definitely worth what he's making. |

It was a team collapse, but being the leader Dion is supposed to be, he should have gotten his team going and it should never of happened. |

Id wait till next trade dealine to trade him, but try to resign him for cheaper before then. You're right, it is a concern though. Im not against trading Phaneuf, im against trading him because of the notion that he sucks or that he is holding this team back. Same with Kessel. You trade them only if you cant keep them, but you keep them if and until you can. |

He's decent in the corners, but isn't good in front of his net. and too slow when guys are coming down on the rush. |

I think he just wants a one year deal so he can be a UFA next summer and really cash in and shop around. I dont think the issue is the Pens. IMO. |

While I agree he's not a saviour type player, and you can make valid arguments against him wearing the C. he's a good defensman.
He played with AHLers for most of the season and carried them. If he had a decent partner to take some of the pressure off him it would be a different story.
The Keith/Seabrook comment earlier was great. If Phaneuf played with Keith, he'd be as effective as seabrook in my opinion. and i think we can all agree seabrook is pretty good
the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
Theres not a whole lot of dman i would trade straight up for phaneuf.
If its about contract, and him wanting a raise, or walking and we get nothing in return. then that's a different story |

here are all the Defensemen that are better than Dion
Chara
Kronwall
Weber
Letang
Suter
Subban
Karlsson
Kieth
Seabrook
Doughty
Voynov
Pietrangelo
Timonnen
Schultz
Martin
Oliver Ekman Larson
Here are guys at his level
Green
Streit
Campbell
Byuglien
Carlson
Girardi
Stall
Markov
Erhoff
You give any defender enough power play time they will rack up points. He logs minutes for us that can simply be shifted. I don't even put him as a top two defensman on our team. I think Franson and Gardiner are better than him. I also think gunnarson and Fraser are better than him in the defensive zone.
Dion is the worst best defensman in the league and we are better through subtraction. All that being said if we can resign him for 5 million. Done! - danielmacd

this is the one thing i can agree with (not that its his fault, but that he doesn't get the boys goin). when its time to rally the troops i don't see dion stepping up and providing that spark.
