I didn't mean in it terms of tradeability, but more to the fact that there could be two good goalies with having no desire to play back up and not enough time for both to see enough net.
- systemtool

.. yeah it could be a distraction. Hopefully it means we have a tradeable asset though!

And hopefully by then we aren't still hunting for a real #1 center

Seguin's first 3 years - 121pts / 56 goals in 203 games
Kessel's first 3 years - 152pts / 85 goals in 222 games

In terms of defensive play, like you said, that's more about what you are held accountable for by the coach and system he puts in place. Kessel was a + 23 in his second year.

Interesting. I could have sworn someone else posted stats that were different, showing Seguin off to a better start?

And the Leafs fans overrate Jake Gardiner quite a bit. He's a good prospect, but he's proven nothing at the NHL level to this point. I don't necessarily agree with Cloutier, but it isn't the worst trade proposal I've ever heard.......The Kessel trade would be.
- Sammy Van Hagar

He's proven more in the NHL than Schultz has. The Kessell trade has panned out for the Leafs as far as I can tell...would rather the proven explosive star any day, and in this j stance, one 8 pt game does not make a star.

Lots of interest in Dave Bolland in both conferences. The Calgary Flames, I'm told by a source out of Canada, are strongly in the hunt. Montreal, Edmonton, Florida and Toronto also possibilities.

From the hawks blogger

He would be a great 3rd line Centre for us... winner's pedigree and plays hard every shift.... would kinda make Grabbo expendable and maybe we would have to trade him if we land a top centre...

JVR / Vinny Lecavalier? / Kessel
Lupul / Kadri / Clarkson (big possibility of signing him)
McClement / Dave Bolland? / Kulemin
McLaren / Colborne / Orr

Grabbo traded for depth 4th liner with skill who can be inserted into the line up for either Orr or McLaren and with a draft pick or a depth dman and a pick

Phaneuf / Gunnarsson
Liles / Gardiner
Fraser / Franson

Holzer / Blacker make it as a 7th dman.

But what if Rielly makes the team... then what??? Personally I think we shouldn't rush him and let him play in juniors for 1 more year but if he is THAT good... then we have the makings of a rather scary yet talented D corps!!

EDIT:

Reimer
Bernier

Maybe Carter Ashton makes the team this year as the 4th liner depth guy we need....
Sooooo many options

If a team has to wait 4 or 5 years to see if they have won a trade,,,,,they have already lost that trade.
- bixll

This really is a good point.

How long does one team go on "winning" the trade, before you can say they won.

What if, 3 years from now, Seguin and Hamilton are more impactful or worth more together on the trade market than Kessel...

Does Boston win?

If Boston goes 6 years at that point "losing" the trade (assuming Kessel is re-signed)... does the shift in the balance between Kessel vs Seguin+Hamilton occuring that far down the road mean Boston won?

The 3 years that the Leafs have "won" so far has to count for something.

(notwithstanding the idea that the trade was very poor timing for Toronto given the no-even-close-to-playoffs state of their team.)

Rielly is a no brainer. Finn could have a shot if he has a good camp and strong start. Has to stay healthy. Rupert is a long shot, surprised he's even invited.

I think that was posted in relation to first 200 games played or something

Tough to compare first 3 seasons because in all fairness seguins 3rd season was a half season.

Kessel played 222 games in first 3 seasons (152 pts), seguin played 203 games in first 3 seasons (121 pts)

edit: no matter how u look at it from a stats point of view Kessel>seguin.

It should be
Kessel vs Hamilton / Seguin / Jarred Knight (He's the guy Bos drafted with the 2nd we gave them)

the crossover episodes were....interesting...

still like csi vegas the best....danson really surprised me, he's actually good at the part...different, but good..an emotional angle to the part that grisholm and fishbourne lacked...though fish and gris were "deep" instead which was good also

I hope it's Vinny Lecavalier, his size, creativity and 2 way game are exactly what we need. paves the way for a grabo buyout as well.

Sam Kinison

One of the funniest guys ever. Nobody could go on an epic rant like Kinison.

He hated everything and had no boundaries; perfect for a comedian.

Just to throw a wrench in your approach, which is logical in nature, is that there is no guarantee the Leafs would have drafted those players if they picked at that spot or even more complicated is they may have traded the picks for more value including trading down and acquiring more young talent. Or maybe trading up to get the first overall.

In other words, at the time of the trade it wasn't assumed the value of the 1st rounder would be the second overall pick. If they had held onto the pick on draft day they may have been able to use that pick in a trade to acquire someone other than Kessel (or Kessel as well and probably not an additional first and second rounder).

Maybe if they didn't want to draft Seguin they could have leveraged themselves into a position to acquire a young, legitimate star franchise centre. Not straight up, obviously, but it would have been a huge bonus.

So while you could argue that the Leafs "won" the trade you could also argue that they may have been able to obtain more value for the pick considering where it ended up (which is obviously hindsight).

My main beef with the trade was that the pick wasn't top 5 protected or something. Then we'd have Kessel and Seguin and we would have hands down destroyed Boston on that deal. Not sure if it was a deal breaker for Boston or if it was Burke's arrogance thinking they were punching a ticket to the playoffs anyway but I think it's something we should have pushed for.

If Letang is turning down 7per long term. You stay far far away from him.

Sure you can point to his Norris Finalist title, but thats all about points these days, not being a well rounded defenseman.

For THAT much money + what you'd give up in a trade. NO THANKS!
