She is in her 50's, highly doubt she has dementia...likely guess is that when she came home the little boy was passed out. She likely felt that few more minutes in the car would not be a problem. Then likely got distracted and fell into her usual routine that does not involve kids and forgot. Horrible tragedy but does happen a fair amount.
