Agreed, Kessel is starting to show signs of life developing a defensive conscience, but he doesn't have the right tools to be a dominant defensive player and maintain 40+ goals
- Johannes19

Show me a (frank)ing "dominant defensive player" that maintains 40+ goals?

Any compliance buyout should still come with a penalty (% of cap-hit) to the team that buys this players out.

It makes no sense that Tor still has to carry a 2mUS$ penalty for its two previous buyouts, while other teams now have the luxury to get rid of these ridiculous contracts that led to the lockout..

The teams that would not make use of the compliance buyout should at least be able to use one of the compliance buyouts on the previous buyouts caphit (max 4mln relief for example).

In TOR case, that would give an extra cap space of 2mln - advantage to the players on the roster is that it would be less necessary for TOR to use the compliance buyouts on any of their contracts..

Hope Nonis isn't that stupid, there's no guarantee he would sign in Toronto, he could go right back to the Pens next year
Staal wasn't going anywhere else, playing with his brother.

Let him sit in Pitt one more year

Sorry only Weber gets Weber $$$$

Just some food for thought - it's going to be an interesting summer contract wise because of the new CBA.

Weber's contract pays him 92 million over the next 8 years (11.5 per year). Suter gets 80 over the next 8 years (10 per year). Both had the benefit of the back diving years tacked on at the end.

In a world where Suter is 10/yr isn't Letang worth 7 or 8? I'm not suggesting the Leafs should do it - in fact I hope they don't - but just some food for thought.

Can't have or afford both Dion and Kris...it's either one or the other.....question is do we keep Dion (who only needs to have his icetime reduced to reduce mistakes), or do we trade him and replace him with Kris?...

Depends what Phaneuf is asking for $$ wise. Letang is going to cost 2 or 3 really good young assets and about 7.5/yr in cap space.

If Dion wants similar money I'd consider saying "pass" to both. Move on and look for some other building blocks.

He's not Weber, Suter struck gold due to being a UFA. But Shero isn't stupid like Poile, he'll get something for him a year out instead of sticking to that stupid loyalty thing, I think Poile is a good GM, but he thinks with his heart and not his head, Shero is the opposite.
Letang could get what the others got or close to it, if he waits it out, we'll see, but Nonis has to be smart & stand pat, Pitt could be using him big time on this.

True, but lately things have been different, remains to be seen if they offered Letang $7 million, that's $30 million for 4 players Crysby Malkin Neal Letang
They would have to do something with head case goalie and Martin or the $ will really be hurting

... two players among the top 5 in the game.

I don't think Letang or Phaneuf are at the top 5 at their position. Letang, *maybe*, but the absence of defense from a defenseman is pretty concerning... especially at north of 7 mil.
