I bet if Dion was on the ice for the winning goal in OT in game 7, you'd be saying different.

But it was Franson. Going up against Bergeron.

Something he can't do. Go up against top players.

- jbold

It didn't matter at that point. But I like the fact that you completely dismissed how i was right about game 4 even though you said I was continually being proven wrong.

Here lemme throw some stats out their at you.

Dion Phaneuf 1G 2A -6
Cody Franson 3G 3A +/- 0

And he does it all without a legitimate top pairing partner.

Chara has Boychuk/Seidenberg

Keith has Seabrook,

ect.

Look what happened to Weber when they took away Suter.

He looks very, very average.

- jbold

Meh still on a good pace 28 pts in 48 games... plus weber is better than suter, more qualities he brings to the table... defensiviely ill give suter is better

Why isn't he a #1? I'd actually like a sincere answer besides "I don't like him."

He plays the hardest minutes of anybody in the league and finished 11th in Norris voting. He was top 10 in a number of important statistical categories.

Carlyle believes he's a number 1 and that seems to have been validated by the fact that he was the TOI leader (by a mile) on the 5th best team in the conference.

It seems that the onus is on his detractors to prove that he's not a #1, seeing as he has justified that standing with his play.

- Leeman4Gilmour

Lack of options and the fact he makes #1 money.
I like Phaneuf, I like what he brings to the game, but having said that I also agree he is not a true #1. He's a good #2.

anyways, i liked how the avs got back tanguay! wasnt he the one that got the game winning goal to win cup? Excellent move to get rid of jones and bring a veteran presence back with the avs

Sakic and Roy are getting the band back together. Hejduk will be rejuvenated. I'll call Forsberg and Krupp and tell them to lace up....and tell them they can have Liles back too.

Since when has money dictated who plays in Toronto?

In case you hadn't noticed, Mike Komisarek has been benched for months upon months.

There are two types of people here. One who see only positives in Phaneuf, and those that see only negatives. The guy has all the physical attributes, but does show a pretty lousy hockey IQ sometimes with bad pinches and poor defensive zone coverage. Bottom line is is he worth what he gets paid? Right now I would suggest he is overpaid by a certain amount. And the minutes played argument has more to do with a lack of depth than Dion being great. I like the guy resigned at 5 maybe even 6, so long as it makes room for someone thats better in terms of positioning and foot speed (in the down low areas). My argument for trading him only stems form the fact that he won't take less money, just don't see it happening, and if he plays as much as he does each night, I don't see a championship with that scenario.
- aminnes

Yup. I think he's a decent defenseman but is weighing the team down. I don't want Rielly learning from him. Phaneuf is a bit of a Richard and has an incredibly boring personality. Lupul should be captain.

How did Franson have trouble? I recall Seguin having a grand total of 0 points the whole series and Bergeron only having an impact in game 7. Bergeron was goaless until game 7.

Do you think that fresh legs might have had something to do with this?

And, like Franson, Gardiner was on the ice for 3 of 5 goals against in game seven. If he had been put out there 5-on-6 for the last minute, he would have probably taken a -5 that night.

- Leeman4Gilmour

Honestly, the way that game was going, you could have had Jesus and a mack truck playing defense in those final few minutes and I'm not sure it would have made much of a difference. The entire team was a shellshocked deer in the headlights, so it's pointless to use who was and wasn't on the ice in your arguments.

Well thats the other side. Should he be the captain. If the club doesn't like Wilsons choice, they may have to move him.

I like the move though, tanguay is one hell of a player and can still play really good. I think he is better than jones personally, (frank) jones i wonder if sakic or roy pushes for forsberg to come back and get a job in management as well, that would be something to see most definitely! and yeah for sure i think they will resign hedjuk and the leafs trading liles back for a low draft pick to relieve some salary

See, there is nothing of value in this post. It's an assertion without evidence.

If Phaneuf was truly put into the number 1 role for lack of options, why did he do such a good job at it?

#7D, no-name Bartkowski (I seriously don't even know his first name) probably thinks that Franson struggled a bit.

It doesn't normally, but the fact he does make that kind of money and wears the 'C', it kind of pre-meditates that he should be the leader and #1 d-man.

I dont know why you're thanking him. It's pointless arguing about who was, and wasnt on the ice... But you're trying to criticize Phaneuf by bringing up him being on he ice for certain goals against..

So Franson didn't step out on the ice the entire playoffs until game 7? That's funny, he finished the playoffs with 6 points but Toronto only had 4 goals in game 7

nah I had the wrong highlight pack up, so apologies for the "dumbass". They played together that game though - was when Carlyle started mixing it up.

Sorry guys, I started this whole D-man disagreement with a single post, It wasn't my intention to create a small cluster(frank).

I think Leiweke is very hands on with this team. He basically told Nonis to bring in Bernier. And i have the suspicion he will ask him to move Dion.
