The rights to ryder!

Jk...hopefully evander kane, bobby ryan, or a top 5 draft pick.

I think the draft pick is more likely than anything. However, if we get a pick, and dont take back any money, that might work in Richards favor to stay.

Seems like a Richards buyout comes down to whether or not Slat's can make a trade... I want to know who they are targeting!!!

Not sure about this but aren't they still partially on the hook if they trade him and he retires before the end of contract? I thought I heard something like this

#NYR Sorry, shaky wireless at BOG. Sather addressed Messier departure, said there is no friction and he parted on "great" terms w/org

Katie Strang @KatieStrangESPN
#NYR Sather did concede, however, that being passed over for Rangers coaching job was part of Messier's decision to leave

I don't think any of us are shocked by this and kind of expected it. We knew if Mess wasn't picked it, it wouldn't end well. As much as Mess can say that's not why he left, reading through the lines is pretty easy here.

How is that possible? And I don't think they would be trading him.

Its not to trade Richards, its about bringing in another player whose contract will force the Rangers hand at buying out Richards.

The cap recapture effects any team the player was on during the contract.

Not sure of the exact details but its meant to punish the team that originally signed the player to the contract along with any team that trades for the player because of their valuable cap hit. It essentially forces teams to use the buyouts instead of trading the players.

I think the logic behind the recapture and buyouts is to force the owners into spending 10s of millions of dollars to buyout these players while getting nothing in return. Pretty brutal punishment.

Doesn't matter thanks, it's just one more reason to buy him out.

I didn't know about it either until some leafs fan in a Vancouver thread told me and linked me to a source after I said that if the leafs trade for luongo, only van would be punished once luongo retires.

Here is what I wrote on cap-recapture rule in my Richards blog:
Because of the "cap advantage recapture rule," the Rangers would be facing hefty penalties in the event that Richards retires early.

The rule penalizes teams for any cap advantage gained from a player whose salary exceeds his cap hit in a given year. Richards was paid $24 million in salary over the first two years of the deal, which comes with an annual cap hit of $6.66 million. The last three years of his deal, he is due to make $1 million annually.

Under the parameters of the rule, the Rangers would be charged with a penalty of $5.66 million if Richards were to retire in the offseason of 2017, $8.5 million in 2018, and $17 million in 2019.

If the Rangers do buy out Richards, he would get $24 million over the next 14 years.

And if i understand what i read correctly, and according to the cap recapture calculator on capgeek, any other team would be hit with a penalty as well if we traded him - and our hit would not go down.

Say we trade richards this year, he retires at the same 37 jan mentioned - we get banged for 5.66 million a year (total salary paid while he was on the team - total cap hit while he was on the team 57m vs 40m divided by 3 years left) for the last 3 years of his deal, and team B would get banged for 2.11 million a year for the last 3 years of his deal (total salary paid for the term he's on the team at 33m - 26m divided by 3 years left)

Edit: Math is questionable on the first part...capgeek says 5.67m still if he gets traded but my calculations say 24m - 13m = 11m / 3 = 3.67m recapture penalty for final 3 years...

Messier showing his true colors as a petulant crybaby. If he played now with the scrutiny of Internet blogs, etc. I think he wouldn't have the reputation he has. Somewhere Roger Neilson is smiling and I'm sure Trevor Linden, Tom Renney, Mike Gartner, Petr Nedved and a few other first class people have a little smile. Even though I despise Torts and rejoiced at his firing I found it slightly odd that Bob Mackenzie referenced Messier as to organization not being happy with him. And then made perfect sense when Mess wanted job.
