Yeah, I read an article on this last week. Teams are going to have to get really creative to somehow avoid these penalties, or at least minimize them. The biggest thing is that every GM and even some of the owners offering up these contracts might not even plan to be around 10 years down the road so to them it's probably all fun and games, but I guess it could hurt their franchise's value since the new owner would have to know next to nothing about the NHL to realize what a competitive disadvantage some of these teams(including the Canucks) will be at for a few years.

If a lot of the people who signed those deals aren't around anymore by the time the new CBA comes about I wouldn't be surprised to see those penalties get eliminated. Will help some teams, will be too late for others.

Chicago wasn't exactly a big, gritty team. Canucks actually don't have that many euros compared to the league average per team. And Edler is a physical guy(usualy right up there in team hits), Hansen plays and works his ass off, Sedins are basically this team's entire offense.

Honestly, anyone who makes that argument loses a lot of credibility to me, not every country produces the same type of player, that's (frank)ing ridiculous and totally arrogant thing to say. There's tons of soft ass Canadian and American player in the league. Total joke.

Totally agree. A lot of Europeans are playing junior hockey in N America now too. Anyone who uses the Euro argument has about as much credibility as Don Cherry.

Why not take Loungo and keep 1.5 million in Salary! Yes thats some dead weight on the cap for like ever but you can turn around and actually get some assets for loungo at a cap hit of 3.8 million!!!! If the shoe was teversed I would trade for that cap hit and loungo. If he is Bought out he is the biggest UFA and will get a 7 year 6 million dollar contract!

Wouldn't surprise me if quite a few of these guys starting experiencing major concussion symptoms towards the end of their deals.

I think some relatively minor injuries will turn into "career ending" injuries. A groin pull (or something similar) will probably end Luongo's career with 3 or 4 years left on his contract.

Alberts and our first for their first.

Or we could do Edler + 1st for Skinner + 1st.

The Canucks would have to be offered a fantastic deal to want to pay any amount of Luongo's contract. If they kept $1.5M per year, that's $13.5M. And it all goes against the cap. They only save $10M by not buying him out, it counts against the cap and there's possible recapture. No way any team offers enough to make that worthwhile.

Without LTIR, we still face recapture. No way you can pull off a fake 3-4 year groin injury.

You mean the $5.5mi lhe is owed until he becomes a UFA after next season? Lol...
Maybe you should look at what albatross means:

Maybe if Phaneuf was under contract til he was 53.

yes, thanks for the update. Someone already beat you to it. I don't really follow small market teams so I guess I shouldn't talk about them.

@drosennhl: Asked Mike Gillis about Luongo and where organization stands now with him, but he gave me a no comment complete with a smile.

Maybe Gillis found a taker.

When did the term 'slow-up' become acceptable? Every hockey play-by-play guy now uses it.

It's slow-down.
It's pull-up.

I have no (frank)ing idea what slow-up means.

It would depend on the team and how much cap space they have available now. Can only exceed cap by 10% right now. Otherwise, could be announced whenever they feel like it.

My hopes? I WANT a buyout. Recapture could be the worst thing to ever happen to this franchise. The return better be mindblowing.

I was too young to be a hardcore hockey fan when he played, but I've heard some things and seen some Youtube clips of him.
