Signing one of the best centers of all time to a respectable extension and extending Kunitz for 3 years at an almost identical cap hit? you're right, his moves reek of status quo for the reigning GM of the Year.
Not quite sure what you expected him to have done before the NHL draft. - kill.monsters
Yeah, i think the Kunitz deal is such an under the radar signing. You get a guy who has proven he can play with your 2 big money centers, who has gotten better every year he has played with you, and was in the top 10 in scoring this year, for a 125k raise??? |

Yeah. That is one of the most attractive contracts in the NHL. |

Hypothetical question-
These guys who are getting bought out are getting paid just as much as they would on their (in most cases very pricey) former contracts, right? Could a guy like Lecavalier who is getting older and probably looking to lift the cup one more time potentially sign someplace for peanuts because he would still be making $5 million a year? Could he sign with a team for league minimum in this instance? Again, totally hypothetical. |

i dont think letang is worth 7yr/49M. especially with the $ committed to Sid and Geno. Letang also wants a full no trade/no movement and shero offered a limited movement, correct?
what do you do with: doumolin, maata, harrington, despres, bortozzo? not that any of them are letang but if they are against the cap, i would like the $ spent on another winger, not a defenseman who jumps in the play and exposes his partner. |

I think Letang should be paid on the same level as Karrlson. I'm not entirely convinced that Letang is better than him, because Karrlson plays on a worse team while getting similar point production. Anybody who says Letang doesn't get at least a sliver of his points from Crosby and Malkin is obtuse. - TomKlassen
So, if you think he benefits from playing with Crosby and Malkin, then you shouldn't think he should be paid the same level as Karlsson. Your comments are conflicting.

They actually get less, over a longer period.
For example:
Lecavalier will get 4.8 for the next 2 seasons, 3.8 the 3rd season, and then 1.8 until 2027 |

and that is the difference-kunitz wants to play here. same with geno and sid. letang wants the largest #. is that because of age? pride? either way, i get the impression that letang wants to break the bank. he can go and hang out with parise then. |

Report on TIOPS is saying 8yrs at 52-54 mil with very little wiggle room. Also says Letang's camp is furious over the Toronto rumor. Letang's agent says that's completely unfounded. So pretty much confirms what we all think about Rossi. - madmike71
So....Letang's salary can be between $6.5M and $6.75M with us (if this report is actually right). That would be the most I'd be willing to pay for him, really. I hope they aren't giving him a NMC... |

You are missing the point champ. Status quo means the same darn team that is coming back, absent the guys that came in like Iginla, Murray, Morrow. There seems like there are no improvements coming.

If they are giving him the money then he won't have the NMC, if they take away some of the money they would probably give him a limited NMC. |

Okay, so if Lecavalier decided to sign a 1-year deal at league minimum he would be essentially be getting a raise that year, and then he could look for a longer deal, perhaps a return to Tampa Bay after that at a more fitting price? Again, totally hypothetical. I'm just bored at work. haha |

You don't know that. It's all speculation. I've heard that he has stated personally that he wants to stay with the Penguins. It seems like Shero is doing his due diligence with Letang. Differnent situation then Kunitz or even Dupuis, as this next contract for Letang will take him through the prime of his career. I don't mind if he takes a few days to decide the next 8 years of his life. |

@TIOPS_DePaoli: #Penguins have made it known to Letang's agent Kent Hughes there isn't much wiggle room on latest offer of 8 years worth close to $56MM
Yikes... Take it or leave it Letang, ya greedy wiener |

I'm not against bringing back a team that had the 2nd best record in the NHL last season and made it to the Eastern conference finals. They were better then at least 26 teams last year. |

This is something i'd love to know: if he's bought out now and than signs with another team for a year only, could he get back to Tampa after the deal expires? I hope not. They should give a time frame of at least 3 years.. |

That's a lot of cash and he gets to continue to play with a legitimate contender every year. He should take it...what's another few million when you're guaranteed 56. |

If Shero is giving him 7 mil a year, he must know something about the cap next year. If the cap is 70 mil next year going forward, 7 mil for Letang is doable. |

Well, champ, in addition to two growing stars in Bennett and Despres we currently have 10 unsigned RFAs and UFAs. I'm failing to understand how "the same darn team is coming back." Again, I'm not sure what trades you expected to happen while the finals were still going on. |

That's 8 years @ $7M right on the table...
I don't know what to think if this is true. $0.5M higher than what we expected. |

I think it all depends on the language of a NTC/NMC. Shero won't do that kind of term and money if Letang has most of the control in that NTC/NMC area. |

Hm, that would be a little different. You generally don't see deals like this go down without at least a modified/limited one. |
