That's expensive as poop.
- UsernameUnknown

Yeah, but worth it, I'd say.

I know I'm going to get poop on for saying this, but the closest comparison to Phaneuf-Letang would be Pronger-Neidermayer.

You put a guy with a heavy shot and a mean streak with an elite puck mover and let them go for 25+ minutes a night.

Who gave him that ugly scar on his hand? Obviously the work of a Bruin after the whistle.....

Some people don't seem to realize that flipping Phaneuf for help at center is just shifting the problem around.

Yes, it's hard to find a #1C. It's equally hard to find a #1D.

- Leeman4Gilmour

Not really, you just wait for Calgary to have one and trade a bunch of crap for him

To anyone who says Letang isn't physical doesn't watch him play. He's physical, he's a good two way player who is asked to be the only offensive dman since Goligoski left. Look at the main Power Play unit for Pittsburgh:

Neal - Crosby - Dupuis/Kunitz

Malkin - Letang

The 2nd unit doesn't even come close to being as good.

In Toronto... Seeing Letang and Phaneuf play together would be an interesting dynamic. We're all harping he needs a Defensively minded Dman to pair him with. Personally, I feel you out him with an equally skilled player his game becomes more role defined, not trying to do everything. One guy is more defensive, the other more offensive. But neither have to do everything in order to accomplish what the coaching staff outlines.

Letang, Phaneuf, Franson and let's say Scudari is a huge, physical and two way capable. Throw in Fraser, and say somebody like Ranger if he's willing, you have two Defensive guys, Franson, Phaneuf and Letang covering Offensive roles with defensive games, and Ranger who was a true two way guy in Tampa, all of a sudden the D is multifunctional and less exposed. Bernier and Reimer would be that much better.

Upfront, there doesn't need to be a lot of change. If we can get Boyd Gordon, relieve Mac, and maybe pry Malone out of Tampa for a good pick then you have a good corp of guys to work with.

- Viktory

The problem is that he's not built to play physically. I have no doubt that he could if you asked him to, but he gets hurt.

He's the #1D on Pittsburgh by a long shot and it's taking its toll on his body.

Marchand threw a water bottle at him (he walked on it), and then Lucic nailed him to the cross (which was Chara stood motionless with arms outstretched, similar to the last three games of the SCF)

cuz kulemin and malkin have wicked chemistry and shero was stated as having interest in Kulemin for that reason.
- Sheppy99

wicked chemistry against Kazakhstan. I could have wicked chemistry with him in those tournaments against former Soviet block countries that suck in hockey. Stop with the chemistry in the international competitions or in the KHL. The NHL is totally different. Doesn't mean success would happen. I have no desire for Shero to acquire him.

Match made in heaven.

He's no Clutterbuck of course, but hey. Dion can be the more Physical, Dman with the big shot. Letang can be the puck mover/scorer who throws the body around a little.

I'm fine with an elite pairing no matter who does what.

Letang for Gardiner, 1st, Colborne. Gardiner has great potential, Letang is a star D and only 26. Then trade Phaneuf for a Center!!

Well, maybe he should have listened to me having no desire to acquire Iginla. We would have our first back.

Very talented, but this guy is afraid to go into the corners as he usually gets nailed to the boards.

Or just keep Phaneuf and roll with basically the same offense we went with last year (that finished 5th in goals for).

I can't believe that after getting Letang, we'd be in a rush to trade Phaneuf. Wouldn't everyone be dying to see them on the same roster for at least a few games?

I don't get why we need letang that badly when Gardiner is projected to become the same type of d-man that letang already is.

Also Reilly is projected to be a similar d-man as well.

I fail to see why the leafs need letang at all to be honest. I'd rather our offense revolve around Gardiner, Franson, Gunnerson and possibly liles and Nonis focuses on bringing in one dimensional defensive d-men who are cheaper.

Or keep both, and be a better team.

If we're building from the net out, we've got the net covered in theory, Phaneuf and Letang suddenly makes the other two pairings look better, so Franson, Gunnerson, Ranger, Scudari, whoever they have down there can become better players with less pressure, and more importantly, there is less individual pressure on Phaneuf.
