Gardiner Kulemin 1st for Letang

Yeah. I could see that too.

Hopefully we are able to re-sign Letang first....if not...what the hell...

- Orpik44

It would kill me to see Gardiner go, but if we ever had the chance to get Letang and Phaneuf together in their primes... watch out.

That's a pairing that could anchor your blue line for 5 years. Some teams have the luxury of never worrying about their defense. We'd be one of them.

...agree on your first premise, but you're not considering all points of value. A #1 C can be a bit smaller if the wings compensate and the C has a lot of talent. P Kane is a C/RW who is small, he does pretty well, no? Crosby and Gagner are almost exactly the same size...Crosby is pretty good, no?

I think Gagner totally has the talent to be a #1 C. Sure he may not be as skilled as Crosby or Kane, but he's closer than you give him credit for...

- mventres

If we could swing a deal for Gagner that did not include Dion, I'm game. I believe that he would provide an upgrade, and fit well with the plan (get better, get younger), but we can't do it unless someone is ready to replace Dion. Maybe we can sign a couple of guys to make this more feasible? As it stands though, we just can't afford to lose Dion with no ready-made replacement for his time/workload...

I don't see him as a Penguin. Ek keeps saying Pittsburgh LOVES Hemsky. I don't see him as a Penguin. You know Shero loves Kulemin how? Actually dropping fro 30 goals to 7 would be a red flag for every GM.

Off course he would have to agree to a deal for something like that to happen.

If Letang wants to play here we should just wait and grab him as a ufa!

But for fun .... A trade would look and start something like kulemin, 1st rounder +

Dion leaves it frees up 6.5 to sign Letang.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/1201/nhl.players.poll.most.overrated/content.1.html

Phaneuf is year in and year out voted the most overrated player in the league by a poll amoungst current players.

I also Stastny was in the top of the league for PPGvsQOC and I would argue is currently underrated.

If the leafs managed to get stastny for Phaneuf it would be an overwhelming win for them, especially in Carlyle's system.

If the Avs hold onto the max amount of his final year of his contract possible (which they have no reason not to) they could get a huge return for him. Far better than Phaneuf.

I would take his wife though.

simple question - if part of the reason for possibly getting rid of Phaneuf is his contract at 6.5M$, how does acquiring Stastny's expiring contract of 6.6$ help?

If Letang goes, Pittsburgh is getting back a young blueliner in the NHL.

Its not about getting ride of his contract its about filling both teams need's, we need a center they need a D. Both ufa next year just fits.

Some people don't seem to realize that flipping Phaneuf for help at center is just shifting the problem around.

Yes, it's hard to find a #1C. It's equally hard to find a #1D.

Exactly! Why do we do any favours for Colorado? Now, if Colorado can get him under contract for about $5 million going forward, then we do the deal.

To anyone who says Letang isn't physical doesn't watch him play. He's physical, he's a good two way player who is asked to be the only offensive dman since Goligoski left. Look at the main Power Play unit for Pittsburgh:

Neal - Crosby - Dupuis/Kunitz

Malkin - Letang

The 2nd unit doesn't even come close to being as good.

In Toronto... Seeing Letang and Phaneuf play together would be an interesting dynamic. We're all harping he needs a Defensively minded Dman to pair him with. Personally, I feel you out him with an equally skilled player his game becomes more role defined, not trying to do everything. One guy is more defensive, the other more offensive. But neither have to do everything in order to accomplish what the coaching staff outlines.

Letang, Phaneuf, Franson and let's say Scudari is a huge, physical and two way capable. Throw in Fraser, and say somebody like Ranger if he's willing, you have two Defensive guys, Franson, Phaneuf and Letang covering Offensive roles with defensive games, and Ranger who was a true two way guy in Tampa, all of a sudden the D is multifunctional and less exposed. Bernier and Reimer would be that much better.

Upfront, there doesn't need to be a lot of change. If we can get Boyd Gordon, relieve Mac, and maybe pry Malone out of Tampa for a good pick then you have a good corp of guys to work with.

cuz kulemin and malkin have wicked chemistry and shero was stated as having interest in Kulemin for that reason.
