Dion is worth much more than stastny. Stastny isn't the Center the leafs need. They'd need to add more no doubt.
- burn

Unfortunately a #1 center is the hardest position to acquire in hockey. You rarely get one through trade nor free agency. Most of the time they do not make it to FA and the ones who do are grossly overpaid (Brad Richards).

So you need to take a risk on someone cause you will never get a #1 centerman at the top of their game. Why would the team trade him then?

I think stastny is one of the few options available that does make sense. He's defensively responsible, good faceoff man and capable of big numbers.

Why would Letang/Dion even be on the table? We wouldn't replace Dion with an offensive Dman.
- AngryWhiteMale

Well Dion sure isn't a defensive d man

what do you guys think of this trade

letang, sutter

for

phaneuf, kulemin

We know the pens are high on kule but I'm not sure if that really helps us at the center position. Sutter at best is a #2 guy. Still a solid centerman with tons of potential tho

- Sheppy99

Why on earth would Pittsburgh even consider this crap? I'm not sure which Shero would do first - laugh, throw up or hang up?

Letang by far is the best in this deal. Sutter is better than Kulemin. Kulemin can't score anymore. We have a three-center setup so trading Sutter for Kulemin helps that how exactly?

I think you need to go back to the drawing board and start with Letang for Gardiner, your first pick and some good forward prospect not named Joe Colbourne.

Pay for a discount in contract, and you get him for that one year without worrying about the cap implications and being a contender.

In UFA, he'd get a ridiculous deal. 8 years at 64 mil wouldn't be out of the question.

- Viktory

That's true. But i still don't think one year of him discounted is worth losing Gardiner + for. I'd rather use that money elsewhere (stay at home D or Top line centre) and roll with Gardiner and in a few years Rielly.

My thoughts exactly.

Would you sign Franson for $3.5 x 4 or 5?

In your opinion is he a top line center on a team that feels that they are a contender? That's where his value lies.
- OneKaneOneCup

I feel like he is an AMAZING 2nd line center who plays a 200 ft game. I do think he would fit on the top line of the leafs but that isn't how I would label him.

I think he is the best option for a team looking for Depth at center who don't want to risk depth at the same time. He is the ideal type of "player that can get the team over the hump" if they are looking to take a run at the cup. He is also only available atm because of the Avs wealth of centers.

Dion's a guy who was tied 9th in scoring for Dmen in the league while also registering the highest Corsi RelQofC rating of ANYONE in the league. Essentially, he was top 10 scoring for Dmen while having a harder overall assignment than anyone else AND was also playing with Kostka and Holzer.

Call him whatever the hell you want, but try to give that assignment to anybody else and see how they handle it. Maybe only a handful of guys in the league could have managed that.

I'm torn. I kinda want to throw a Subban deal at him (2 years, 5.5m) to see if he can bring it. The downside there is that if he does, then you have to pay him 4.5+ afterwards....

Anybody who is looking for depth at center is not going to want to spend over 6 million a year. Only team willing to pay that is a team considering him as a #1 centerman and that list is pretty short.

Letang's another Whitney imo. Crosby and Malkin can make a superstar d-man out of anyone.....example Paul Martin.
- mykokes

wow...how did I miss that one? This guy is clueless. Martin would be a 1st pairing in his team.

Kadri, Gardiner and your 1st for letang. That's a realistic trade for him. Your delusional if you think otherwise. Really hope the leafs keep phaneuf, love watching him cough up the puck, be out of position and make bad pinches every game.
- kovey27

That sounds a lot like a certain someone from the pens that is involved in a lot of rumors right now....

I'm pretty sure I saw on TSN a comment by Roy saying Mckinnon starts 3rd line center next year for them so who exactly of Duchene, O'Reilly, Stastny is playing fourth line?
- Sheppy99

I saw the same thing. It would either mean they plan to move O'reilly or Stastny to the wing(unlikely)

Or they already have a deal for Stastny in place.
