The Pittsburgh Tribune is saying that if they can't agree with Letang, they would trade him for a current NHLer, a top tier prospect and 1st.
Would A. MacDonald, Nino and our 1st be a starting point?

I agree but if they don't buy out DP then that would not be a bad option. The right way to go would be to buyout DP and not have to worry about a crazy contract.

luongo at the current deal is a terrible option and would set this team back indefinitely.

I'm just not sure how intelligent it is to trade one contract for another. In addition, Vancouver clearly believes Luongo is a tradeable commodity so I have my doubts they'd settle for a trade like this. I agree about Wang not wanting to buy out DP for $24mil over 16 years, though it seems to me the only decent way to do it is through the amnesty clause since it at least wouldn't carry a hit to the cap. As I wrote yesterday, from Wang's perspective, unless you believe DP will be playing 6 years from now, you may as well keep him around and hope he retires. I think if we weren't a team still losing big money on an annual basis, they may have been more inclined to perform the buyout, but Wang has been trying to minimize his loses for a couple of years now.

If that's the case then they're delusional. VAN would be lucky to get an offer like RDP and a third rounder for Luongo. If he was so tradable, Luongo would be gone already. If it would take more than a third rounder and RDP to get Luongo, it wouldn't be worth it.

Again, i agree that the best solution is to just buy RDP out. Wang holding onto RDP in hopes he can play again is simply Wang being stupid and stubborn. Its obvious he will never play at an NHL level again. Keeping him around is only going to cost CW more $$ than he needs to pay him.

If they didn't beleive that then how have they gone through an offseason and two trade deadlines without dealing him for the scraps proposed here? They've been in steady talks with Toronto for two years now and keep saying Toronto isn't offering enough.

I hope we buy out DP but it wouldn't shocke me if they don't.

Word is they made a 'substantial' offer. I think Letang is an excellent player but I'm not sure if he's really what we're looking for. I can't classify him as a shutdown D.

Nabby to Philly...book it
Isles will be going with what they have..no Luongo or Miller...Mike Smith will sign elsewhere..mistake not locking up Nabby IMO Needed him there for an 82 schedule while they test Poulin.....wouldn't be shocked if Smith gets signed by Philly as well.

Dee- whatever happened to Art Staple as a source?
He tweeted the same thing.

This should come as no surprise. As much as Nabby has made a home for himself here, his agent would be negligent NOT to test free agency. Doubtful he'll be offered the primary starting position with many other teams but Garth's offer is probably just North of what other clubs with cap space and a bigger budget would offer a vet backup of Nabbys calibre. Unless a proven upgrade is in Garths sights risking his loss would be a bad way to kick off the free agency. Poulin is not ready to take on the starting role, IMO. Not with our current defense. Wonder why we hear zero mention of Tim Thomas? Either way, we have his rights. If hes 100% NOT an option, his rights should have been shopped and Garth should be public about such things. There's no sense keeping the obvious a secret.

- jmo16

if nabby walks, so be it...PLENTY of other goalie options which gets me to the bold, garth would have traded TTs rights if a team expressed interest in acquiring his rights. but i doubt there are many teams lining up for a 38(?) goalie who hasnt played for over a year...

What secret, they announced months ago that they weren't going to Toll his contract plus you have no idea if he hasn't shopped his rights, but they really aren't worth anything for a 39 year old goalie that is 1 year removed from game action & hasn't decided if he's even playing this year.

I can imagine the story...
Isles trade Tim Thomas to San Jose for a 5th rd pick...by doing so the Isles give Boston their second round pick

Because VAN is delusional. It goes back to the old saying: something's market value is not what someone says its worth. its worth what the market is willing to pay for it.

Agreed but there's very little sign they're changing their philosophy. Plus the risk of trading him and having him retire at say 38 years old is huge for them as they'd get hammered with his cap hit for the next 5 years. I honestly don't see any better option than buying Lou out which is why I think teams aren't biting on the trade front. He's going to hit the market and they know it.

and what might that be? Are you saying that you know everything that is going to happen this season?? Can you guarantee me that Garth will make the right moves? Can you guarantee the Islanders will make the playoffs??

the reality for years is that we have been one of the worse teams in hockey. We made the playoffs this year by a thread. Even though they were impressive in the playoff IF the season continued it would have been quite possible we did not make the playoffs.

The reality of what you speak of is that we are still not where we need to be in this rebuild

Its pretty safe to say RDP will never play for the Isles again. He's a non-factor for the Isles on-ice going forward. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have been demoted last season.

My problem is why not buy him out and use the money elsewhere to better the team. No reason to keep the guy around then.

I do find it odd that you've become progressively more negative since the end of the season. If anything, I figured our little finish would have given you a bit more reason for optimism but you managed to take the other route. We don't have nearly as many holes to fill as we have in previous years. Even if we slightly upgrade at goaltender, we're a much better team. Let's just see how it pans out and try to act a little excited.
