That's the byproduct. Other players can be put in a better role and position to succeed, more suitable to their strengths. I'm not under any illusions as to what Streit is. But he does bring a skill set to the Flyers lineup that they needed. They badly missed Carle.
- MJL

I was always a big Carle fan. I think he led all NHL d-men in even strength points in 2011/2012? Above average offense, great shot blocker, mobile, great outlet pass. People bash him for turnovers, but guys like Coburn and even Luke Schenn in Toronto had comparable turnover numbers.

Streit will have his share because that's the nature of the offensive D-man beast. When guys like Lauridsen have big turnover numbers, it's an issue.

Never understood all the hate for Carle.

Absolutely. Far better than the "Flyers Suck, Holmgren's a moron, They're a laughingstock" bull poop we get sometimes.

Go ahead and try and say this with a straight face

In 2027 the flyers will be paying Ilya bryzgalov 1.7 million.

Me neither. One of the biggest complaints of Carle was his horrendous giveaways that led to goals. Here is a stat from March of 2012 up to that point of the Season.

Giveaways that have led directly to goals: Subban 8, Phaneuf 8, Carlson 6, Chara 6, Yandle 5, Burns 4, Keith 4, Doughty 3, Carle 3.

Move up to which pick? I can see Edmonton trading down, maybe Carolina but that's it.

He had stretches of brilliance. But the team played far more solid defense down the stretch last year, and Bryz was badly outplayed by Mason.

His words and actions didn't help, but the bottom line is, they couldn't sustain the commitment to Bryzgalov with his level of play being merely average

I still think they would have given him the year if he kept his mouth shut

Got it.

Let's run it down, then, as to who's laughing at the Flyers -- and whether they're qualified to do so:

Pittsburgh Penguins: All in with no cup, Marc-Andre Fleury benched, no first-round pick this year, no second round picks the next two years
New Jersey Devils: No first-round pick next season because of cap circumvention with Ilya Kovalchuk, let Zach Parise leave for free, could lose Patrik Elias and David Clarkson for free
New York Rangers: Wade Redden. Brad Richards has seven years left on his contract at a cap hit of $6.7 million per.
New York Islanders: Rick DiPietro

Clearly, nobody in the former Atlantic Division's got anything to be smiling about. So whose fanbases are laughing, again? Edmonton's? Winnipeg's? Carolina's?

I guess Boston and Chicago could have a chuckle, but every other team in the league has plenty of skeletons in their closet.

This is what I have gotten from the Flyers straight from the organzation. Buy outs, which they are. Offense from the point, which they did. And getting bigger up front, which we are waiting for. Goaltending goes without saying. So what am I missing?

Timonen-Schenn
Streit-Coburn
Grossman-Gustafsson\Meszaros
Gervais

Is this not an NHL defense? Money aside, how do we add even if we do subract Meszaros? Who do we add? It isn't a huge market of defenders. I'm under the impression that Streit is our Timonen bandaid whether we like it or not. At least the get bigger up front I understand.

I think that doesn't matter. That the results weren't there, and they have other things they want to do, and need the Cap space. Was why they did it.

I think I read that on Broad Street Hockey or something comparable.

I believe that the Flyers added Streit to try and replace what they lost in Carle. Not as even a temporary replacement for Timonen. The only place that Streit is an equal to Timonen, is on the point on the PP. The Flyers are under no illusion that Streit comes even close to replacing Timonen in the future.
It's a decent defense, not a great one.

I've seen Gretzky play live. I've seen Lemieux play live. Forsberg has better hands than them both. Honestly, best hands I've ever seen. Datsyuk is up there, probably 2nd before Lemieux.
- jmatchett383

I saw Gretzky play maybe 10 times with the Oilers, Kings and Rangers. The thing about him was that he didn't seem all that special. He wasn't real fast, not real big, didn't have a real hard shot, wasn't physical at all. He was none of these things.

But what he did have, was the ability to see the game three steps ahead of everyone else on the ice, and it was OBVIOUS. He didn't seem better, but he just was. Other teams tried to hit him, he just wasn't there to be hit. Other teams tried to keep the puck away from him, so he just went where the puck would be. I never saw a guy find the open man better than he did. He knew you were open before you did.

He did things faster than the other team could react, but at the same time noticeably slowed the game down when the puck was on his stick. It was amazing to watch.

Fans who were critical of Carle had no bearing on why he's not here anymore.

I guess Holmgren is dumber than Carle's critics, because he decided not to bring Carle back.

Just my opinion...I would even go as far as to say that bryz with his offseason antics forced homers and sniders hand

I definitely interested if Blum or Rundblad if they are not tendered by their clubs. Homer loves his reclamation projects. High reward, low risk.

Holmgren decided to try and improve the team by trying to add Suter, and then Weber. And he was okay with risking losing Carle to try and do so. I'm okay with that. And if you can prove that Holmgren didn't bring back Carle because he agreed with the critics. I'm all ears.

Recite this:

In the past ten years, the Flyers have won more playoff rounds than 25 other NHL teams.

Pretty good for a bunch of (frank)ing morons, huh?

And having to buyout Bryzgalov is going to set this franchise back a decade! Oh wait, no it's not! It's going to have zero effect on the future of the team!

Also, Pens beat guy Rob Rossi says the Letang trade talks are heating up, Toronto going hard after him.
