Trust me, I hear you -- I crunched some numbers, thought really hard about if Florida, because they're a cap floor team, might actually not be opposed, in theory, of taking the contract on because no matter what they do, they're going to struggle to be at the floor. Maybe they wouldn't care about carrying a charge but not a player, if that's the money they need to reach the floor.

But I always looped back to this: There's enough long-term contracts out there in the league where you can do that and actually still have the player.

For instance, maybe seven years from now, Jeff Carter's slowed down but is still playing, at age 35. And he wants to get a couple more years in, but no longer fits in LA's plans at that salary. That's not unthinkable, right?

Well, if you're Florida, you could just say, "Hey, LA. Let us have that contract. We'll keep Jeff Carter, put him on the ice for PPs and offensive zone draws, keep his minutes at about 10-12 per game. He still wants to play, but he isn't a Top 6 forward anymore and you want to use that salary on someone who is. You can't do that while paying him the cap charge he has, but we can. It's a win-win for us both."

Understood. Like you, i think he will be a CBO . if I'm homer I consider trading mez for lu + $500k cap and see what Vancouver says. (Lu would have a $4.833 aav). Then I'm pretty much done for the off season.

do you think Anaheim would do Coburn, Read and next years 1st for Ryan?

For Bill or anyone who Knows the new CBA rule.

What about Vancouver retaining part of the contract ????

I thought under the new CBA teams could trade some of the cap space? what if Van agreed to take 1/3 of the salary ????
that would make his salary ...or cap hit only just north or 3.5 million.

now vancouver ownership would be happy...because they don't have too pay the 2/3 of the buyout #....then perhaps there could be a hockey trade....in there as well.

But as Bill said, why would Loungo do this? He has a NTC. If he refuses to waive then he gets 2/3's of his current contract for doing absolutely nothing. Plus he can sign a new contract that makes up that money, for a shorter time frame.

So he will be able to make more money, and play fewer year (if he wants to retire) if he gets bought out.

The only think Loungo has to worry about is if Vancouver decides to hold onto him for 1 more year and use the buy-out next year instead.

For 8 more years?!?!? Didn't we just get rid of 9 year contract? Paying him 5 mil a season is absurd. I would like to think we'd be able to get a 3rd rounder for Mez, second tops, but thats a stretch.

Every player who is going to be bought out has to be places on Waviers for the purpose of a buyout first.
- MJL

Are you saying any player bought out may be claimed by another team before they hit UFA? I don't think that is true for CBA buy-outs. If that was the case I don't think Briere would hit the market.

Bryz and Lu have completely different contracts from a cap recapture standpoint. Vancouver will pay most of Lu's recapture if he's traded since they benefitted most from his low aav. Philly was on the hook for most of bryz if he's traded or retired.

Draft either Rasmus Ristolainen, Darnell Nurse, or Ryan Pulock (I'm ok with the big Russian dmen also)

Trade for a Edler (Van), David Rundblad (Phx), or another younger dmen.
(I'm ok with B. Schenn going the other way depending on the return)

Sign Emery

Sign our own FA (including Giroux)

And call it an offseason.

NOTE: If they draft Rasmus Ristolainen they might not need to trade for a dmen. He's been playing against older players in Finland, he may be able to jump in.

FYI: Strong possibility that Eric Wellwood never plays another NHL game again because of the injury he incurred last year.

If i'm looking long term with the youth we have, I'm looking for a goalie who is young (like mason) or is liked enough by team mates to mentor mason if need be.

I can't really see Luongo being that guy. Could he? Absolutely. Schneider has turned out pretty well!

If I'm gm, I'm more concerned with revamping the defense and bringing in forwards round out the team on both sides of the puck.
