I am sure this was already discussed here, but very interesting tactic by the Leafs and Lightning if true.

Also not getting the 5th pick for Coburn alone.

Plus, with that contract...(frank) Weber.

If that were the Flyers that tried that stunt, there'd be fines, I'm sure.

I hadn't seen this.

So Toronto was willing to pay 30 mil for Tampa's first round pick. Is that what they're saying. That's crazy on both ends.

And FWIW, I think the rule is stupid.

We'd probably have to give up a first round pick.

I saw you mention this yesterday Jsaq. If they didnt match last year would you have been ok with that contract? Only reason I ask is that it seems we are in a better position $ wise this offseason and would be able to absorb that with a few minor moves. Just curious since we were the ones who came up with the contract to begin with.

EDIT: Though we gotta sign our RFAs for next year with this opportunity

The NHL wants to prevent cap circumvention. I agree it is stupid. If somebody wants to trade an asset to get a lower cap hit, what's the harm? They already allow teams to trade money.

Under the old CBA, I would have been fine with that deal. Now, with cap recapture, deals like that terrify me. Anything happens to him, they'd be screwed for years. Imagine he comes over, plays a couple years, then gets hurt and retires. Or even dies somehow. Then you have a ton of dead cap space to worry about.

Too much risk on the recapture provisions.

You could just buy brown under wear and save yourself all the hassle.
