There is an awesome punch line here and I just can't articulate it. Stupid brain of mine.

NHL teams really can't afford to carry dmen that aren't able to perform a dependable, smart first pass anymore... the ones that can't have been flushed out of the league since the previous lockout, or have been converted to forward (John Scott).

There's not a guy on the Flyers' current blueline that isn't capable of making that first pass, including Grossmann. Of course, some guys are more adept at it than others, but there's no Luke Richardsons on this team.

- Tomahawk

The Flyers defense gets unfairly maligned in this regard. People focus on the defense, but ignore that the exaggerated gaping limits their options. A good first pass from circle to blue line can be made easily, but when they are forced to pass from circle to red line, it leaves a lot of opportunity for a patient disciplined team.

I'll be interested to see if this positive tone keeps up after we witness Streit get beat wide and out-muscled by opposing forwards, make a few Matt Carle-esque turnovers right in front of his own net, and fires a few pucks right into opponents' shin-pads leading to breaks the other way.

If he were anything close to Kimmo-level, the Islanders wouldn't have hidden him on their third-pairing and limited his exposure to hard matchups.

Small, slow, old... right now, he's still capable of eating some minutes at ES, but as time goes on, he'll likely be confined strictly to PP specialist duty.

Someone outlined his buyout. I believe its 1.75 cap charge the last 2 years after he plays 2 years. Thats not terrible if the cap rises as expected. Should hopefully have two dmen on entry level contracts

I can't disagree more. Sure at the NHL level you have to be able to make some passes, but the fact is, moving the puck out of the defensive zone was this teams major issue last season. And with Timonen being one of the few guys capable of this retiring next year, we will still need another one.
- youarewrong

You need to go back and watch some games from the '04 and earlier... most of the bottom-4 dmen were just pathetic with the puck.

Mike Gillis said yesterday on Team1040 (Vancouver AM sports radio) that they're not buying out Lu, now I know they aren't truthful with their inner dealings 99% of the time. But I fully believe him on this one. That said, Cory Schneider @ $4 million per to the Flyers is a heck of a good deal for one of B. Schenn or Couturier, wouldn't you agree?

I disagree, they don't need another 36 year old so called puck mover. They need good all around players that are younger and can be a part of the process.
- iskatefast

You don't win by sitting back and waiting. You need to be constantly moving forward or the league will pass you by. Ask Florida. I don't want to lose for 10 years before the team is "good" again.

Gotta be flexible in these political times.

Did I mention I want the Flyers to draft Rasmus Ristolainen this coming Sunday?

But seriously, short of trading the pick away, I don't think there's any way to be disappointed with this upcoming draft.

I'm a huge Ayn Rand fan, which i'm sure most people on this board are allergic to her, but I was watching a documentary not too long on her and Ed Snyder was on there talking about her. He was a huge fan. Made me love him more.

If they take a goalie with the 11th ill be disappointed for sure. I don't see it happening but some mocks have them doing it.

I'm a government contracted employee, not sure they audit us very often! If they find fraud it makes them look bad. Well bad isn't the right word, worse would be better.

Streit is an over 35 contract. Unless something's changed, they don't get that much relief on a buyout.

Yes, I did check capgeek, but it doesn't mention his deal being an over 35.

Just like Matt Carle you might not see his importance to the defense as a whole. So sure you are going to have people whining about him and his contract with the first turn over. I'm sure you will be on here saying "I told you so." But where will you be when he is making passes to Giroux and Voracek in transition that increases the ES scoring? You wont even notice.

It's funny how the deal isn't even official and we're already discussing viable strategies for how to dispose of him early... Flyers

There is only one goalie projected to go in the first round Zach Fucale. Button projects him to the Devils at 9, but most mocks have him going in the early 20's. I highly doubt the Flyers would draft him, as I'm sure he projects to be years away from being NHL ready.
