clearly you don't even know what good goal tending looks like... do remember when you had it in 2004?
- malcohol

I remember quite clearly actually. I also remember where that goaltending came from. Khabi wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire in Pheonix, then gets traded to Tampa and wins a cup. Goaltending is a very unpredictable position year to year. Tim Thomas was untradeable for years, then got healthy and won a cup in Boston.

Either way, the Bolts aren't trading for Lu. His contract is untradeable. The Bolts have invested significant assets to get Lindback and Bishop. They aren't going to give up more to acquire a 3rd goaltender, esp one whose contract goes until he's 43.

Another Canuck fan thought they should trade Schneider and keep Lou for one more year and then buy him out, going forward with whatever young goalie and a cheap vet to mentor him...
- Flyfreaky
Trading Schneider has always been the right move. He's got a good contract, and he's extremely promising too. The return is just too good not to take.

Except that unless Lou states otherwise, it certainly doesn't seem like he wants to be in Vancouver any longer.

At the end of the day MG needs to get under the cap Lou's contract (or a portion of it) would help. If they go into Sept with both of those goalies on the team it's going to be a major cluster F88k

Hmmm could the Canucks buy out Luongo's contract, then sign him to a 2 year/3.5 mill per and trade him to another team.

I could see Gillis telling Luongo that they would buy him out, if he agreed to sign a shorter contract with them and would be immediately traded to a team that was ready to deal with the new contract.

Luongo gets traded, the new team gets Luongo with a better contract, Luongo gets rich from the buy out, is a starter again, a new contract and the Canuck's get assets back for Luongo.

Would only work if Luongo agreed to resign with the Canucks immediately after the buy out for the purpose of being traded.

Would this work?

Players who are bought out cannot be re-signed by their original clubs for one year

There is no way they go into the next season with Lou AND Scheids. If they do, you can count on the hammer being thrown on Gillis. I'm sure he's felt enough heat long enough and and Lou will be gone real soon.

These are grown men we're talking about. Lu understands the situation, and will welcome what ever he gets, i'm sure.

Don Cherry said it perfect. Gillis has not guts, otherwise this would be over with. You take the better return of the two, and move on. Guys like Ray Shero have guts, and a bit of luck obviously.

So many fans have no clue when it comes to what teams can/can not do.

You can't buy out a player and then re-sign him. At least 1 year has to pass before re-signing a player bought out.

MG is a procrastinator and is looking for a big return, bad combination at this stage of the game.

Technically, they could have him agree to take a year off with a guaranteed contract next year.

Now that's dirty business.

And if Luongo's contract is not that big of a deal as many Vancouver fans seem to think, that is what they should do. They could trade him, not Luongo.

Realistically I think you have 3 options:

Trade Schneider.
Buy out Luongo.
Keep both.

Third option is not likely though. 1st option is not something that Vancouver seems to be interested in, so that only seems to leave 1 legit option.

Why would he do that? Why would he take a year off to sign again with Vancouver, so that they could trade him? Does this make sense to anybody?

Not only that, but I am sure that the NHL would come down hard on Vancouver if this actually happened.

I find it hard to believe that Schneider is untouchable, but i also don't think Gillis could be this dumb. If he actively shops Luongo, doesn't that make Schneider's value higher?
you'd think so
