It's only for a year? I actually think that if it was more years then he'd be more likely to accept. Apparently the Russians pay the players in big bags of cash.

For the record, here is what I think will happen....

Vancouver will announce their intention of putting him on waivers. Other teams will hear this and think.... WAIT A SEC.... we could take on that huge contract for one year and do the same waiver move next year if things do not work out. After all, his annual hit is below 6.

So at the last minute someone offers a 7th pick, someone else offers a 5th and the Canucks trade Lou to a third team (maybe even the Flyers) for two 3rd round picks and a conditional 1st rounded if they win the cup in the next three years.

If not, he just goes on waivers and while the Canucks lose an asset, they gain cap space.

What? Where have you been for the last year. The new CBA doesn't allow you to hide cap through waivers.

Sorry to quote myself but there are a lot of Canucks regs on here at the moment and I would like to hear your opinion on this. Am I out to lunch?

"Burkefection" --- interesting name. Sounds like one of those guys who gets a tattoo when young and is stuck with it after it becomes irrelevant.

BY the way... was it mean to imply "Perfection" or "Infection?" (Honest question, no zinger intended)

I dont think the intention is to hide it... the intention is to put him on waivers and let a team claim him.

I will laugh my ass off if EDM were to claim Luongo.

i can only see a team claiming him on re-entry waivers...otherwise why inherit the same lousy contract?

no one's gonna gamble on this. that'd be terrible management to bank on someone else taking him at a later date. what if he gets hurt? what if he plays badly? etc etc/

it's no different than the silly suggestions previously by some nuck fans that he'll for sure leave a few million on the table and retire early.

any gm that acquires him, through whatever means, has to be fully prepared to pay that entire contract through to the end. anything less would be the definition of doing your job poorly

Re-entry waivers no longer exist. And in that case, the Canucks might as well trade him and eat some of his salary(teams would have to be interested in that case IMO).

there is ZERO chance of this. we have our own cap to worry about.
now if he got bought out, I wouldn't be surprised if edm kicked tires....but the same could be said about tons of teams in that scenario

Why would Lu want to go from being killed in Vancouver to Philly with no defense to speak of where he will get hammered just as hard by their fans.

They might try to do that to avoid having to pay his buyout. Worst case you get him on re-entry and you buy him out anyway.

$5.3m on a top tier goalie is a pretty good deal.

It would be hilarious if he gets bought out and a bidding war follows and he ends up getting another big contract with an even higher cap hit. Whenever Philly is involved, the price goes up(either trade or FA).

Also... ek does not mention that the 10 others teams would have to pass on the Waiver prior to their shot at him.

The order is:

1. Colorado --- I do not see them having serious interest
2. Florida --- DING!
3. Tampa --- DING!
4. Nashville --- you never know....
5. Carolina --- I do not think they would do it
6. Calgary --- Could very well do it
7. Edmonton --- DING (and have showed interest in the past)
8. Buffalo --- Could be
9. New Jersey --- I think they would be in on this quickly
10. Dallas --- you never know

and finally Philly at 11. They will need to offer up a little something to get him. In addition, I am sure that New Jersey and perhaps Florida and Edmonton and perhaps Tampa will also offer a little bit jus to keep him off of waivers. Maybe not Florida as they only have Colorado to deal with.

Rememeber, although it is a cap hit, some of these teams need that to hit the floor and all they have to do is put him on waivers next year if things do not work out. Sure he will be a year older but still serviceable and if no one picks him up, he could go to the minors for 1/2 the salary or they buy him out.
