So you would be ok with Liles, Gardiner, Fraser, Franson, O'Byrne and Gunnarson as our D?

Wow...

- markmark

Goaltending can do wonders for any team.

Plus our PK is solid enough now that our defensive game won't rely solely on our 6 Dmen.

Personally I think the less time Dion spends on the PP, the better

Sorry, from all the games I've seen bernier play, he is better than reimer. There's only about a 40 game difference between the two. Reimer has had one good half season, he too hasn't even played a full season.
- Fakepartofme

Bernier has never played more than just a few in a row. No one really knows if he could handle 65 games in a season.

Regardless of who wins the starting job this deal was highway robbery. If someone suggested we give up Reimer for Frattin, Scrivens and a 2nd we'd tell them to flock off.
- coolehmon41

Right. But for better goalie with a higher ceiling, we'd be like let's do it!

Being able to carry the load and play 8 to ten games in a row at a time consistently is massive. Lots of goalies can play awesome for one or a few games, but the best guys do it over the course of many games, as Reimer proved in his rookie year. I really hope Bernier ripps it up, but this has the potential to open up a hornets nest of problems, and like I said, Bernier doesn't play behind crap d in LA, we'll see how great he is in TO.

Behind Carlyle's system. He'll be fine.

Tandem tenders, I think this is a win win for the leafs. What a tough div the new N.E is going to be, being doubly prepared is good.

Clarkson for nothing eh.

And of course jumping the gun and assuming a guy will sign has never backfired.

Just make sure you post the line combos with him in there.

Done deal.

- robin_steele264

love the line combos.

Same can be said about reimer.
Either way,it's a good deal. I just feel the 2nd was too high, I would have preferred a 3rd but whatever!

Then wait to sign him for nothing.
If you want Volchenkov work out something separate. If NJ wanted Bernier they just had to offer a better deal to LA

- senstroll

LA might not have wanted naything they were offering, and they couldn't send them a backup, the guys in his 40's.

As a person that has been in favor of the Leafs acquiring Bernier for a couple of years, only to be told by the majority on this site that Reimer is better, Bernier isn't good, and I'm nuts, it's quite fascinating to see everybody singing a different tune now that he's on the Leafs.

reimer? when he can prove that he can still keep the puck out when people get in his kitchen.. right now he cant do that consistently enough
- Dozzer

His catching skills were so bad at the end of the Boston series, I was wondering if something was wrong.

They didn't announce any broken or sprained finger or anything, which leaves me with a scarier thought: it was mental.

Because no NHL goalie has that much trouble squeezing his catcher shut.

I have been a proponent for getting P.Stastny for some time now, but not at the cost of Phaneuf. Plugging one hole to spring another doesn't make sense. I would only trade Phaneuf if Duchene was coming back our way. If we are aiming at Stastny, I think the deal would look more like

Tor
P.Stastny

COL
J.Gardiner.

May use some massaging, especially in the cap space area, but these pieces are more equivalent.

One thing people aren't mentioning about Reimer... he's pretty injury prone.

Not what you want in your #1.

This team has a lot of holes.... If you look at it with only those who have contracts this year:

Lupul-Kadri (Obvious re-sign)-Kessel
JVR-Grabo-?
?-?-Kulemin
?-Mcclement-Orr

Phaneuf-?
Gardiner-?
Liles-?

it solidifies his decision, if a team reaches out for you they are aknowledging your skill. Might even help with a signing price, I would say a 4th-5th rounder is worth that.
- Jay Uller

I'm perfectly happy with a 4th or 5th for his rights.

Bernier for his rights?

Ummmmm, no.
