Using some really quick, subjective numbers:

Phaneuf was 11th in Norris voting this year. So let's call him the 11th best defenceman in the NHL.

The eleventh highest paid defenceman (I'm using cap hit) is Kimmo Timmonen - who has a $6 million cap hit.

- Atomic Wedgie

And is there anyone who would prefer Timmonem to Dion?

He probably doesn't, the media also thinks Kadri deserves 4.5, Frattin is a top prospect and Scrivens is a young goalie.
- AdamFrench

Kadri one's the best. Guy played 35 good games in a season where he had an advantage due tp the lockout. Yup let's give him a bag of cash.

perfect scenario for a 2 yr bridge deal

I like this trade for the Leafs. I don't think Reimer is very good at all. He's athletic but he always seems all over te place. He looks like a mediocre starter at best. Bernier could be a solid no 1 and has the higher ceiling. As for what he Leafs gave up, I think it's a nice haul for LA. Frattin is a real nice third liner and more than a throw in. And if you don't think so, take a look at who was on your fourth line this season and you'll realize that depth in Toronto is not a strong point. And second round picks are valuable, even if you guys place no value on picks after he first round. Look at what the Boston Bruins do with their second rounders.

He may be overpaid by a couple hundred thousand bucks. I guess that's what you pay to protect your developing prospects.

There's no way Franson or Gardiner ever thrive in a system without a guy like Phaneuf. Like him or hate him, he's a lightning rod. He takes all the heat.

Having Phaneuf means that the Toronto sports circus doesn't chew up Rielly and spit him out.

Here's something that's a little scarier / funnier:

If you look at the top 10 defencemen (cap hit), it's debatable that more than half of them are worth it:

Weber, Shea NAS Defence 7.857

Suter, Ryan MIN Defence 7.538

Campbell, Brian FLA Defence 7.140

Doughty, Drew LAK Defence 7.000

Chara, Zdeno BOS Defence 6.917

Bouwmeester, Jay STL Defence 6.680

Boyle, Dan SJS Defence 6.667

Phaneuf, Dion TOR Defence 6.500

Karlsson, Erik OTT Defence 6.500

Green, Mike WAS Defence 6.083

And we can call Francios Beauchemin the 4th best dman in the NHL.

um... that 4th line played a LOT of games while Frattin was a healthy scratch for quite a while...

I agree with most of your points, but the Leafs 4th line had nothing to do with depth, or lack there of.
