and that's y I say trade him now.
there will be someone to take his place. Who, I'm not sure. - zazzle
Um. I know Phaneuf gets a bad rep, but he is not even close to replaceable within the organization. Guy is still young too. And shipping a guy out with no replacement is a recipe for failure.

You sure he knows that? Been put on a pedestal his whole career and Don Meehan is his agent. - robin_steele264
Would love to see him decide he wants to leave some money so they can get him a better partner
anything under $6M is a palatable number for 3-4 yrs.
I know you hate him, but the Leafs don't make the playoffs without him. period.

I think you can get much better value. - robin_steele264
I don't disagree with that, but you also get a lesser player. I hate the huge contracts and the way they can tie you up, but Leaf fans are just terrible when they assess their own players...especially Dion. They think Franson at $4.5 is preferable to Dion at 6.5. |
|
|
|
Also did you see reports that Gagner walked away from a 4yr 18mil contract? - Boosinicka
nope.
but if they offered the other 1st round pick $6 mil. bet ya he's looking for 5+ |

Agreed. Do they have the same delusional agent? |

Based on what the Leafs have and not presuming they can acquire upgrades to their defense, I think a healthy Gunner could do wonders for Phaneuf's game. That is if Carlyle plays them together next year. |

Since 2006 he's had a broken hand, a torn ligament in his ankle, another ankle injury, a concussion, a neck injury, and an MCL sprain. - Feeling Glucky?
Right now he is day to day with hurt feelins. |

No.
Kane's OT cup winner trumps that.
Plus he punches out Cabbies so that pretty cool also. - yemrots
that was more for the "2nd best player" part...

I don't think he takes a pay cut.
but what I said was a 5yrs/$5.75 mill cap hit with a full nmc and a partial nmc (10 team no trade to) - zazzle
that's why I think he gets the same contract he has now, 6yrs, 39mil |

what? he wants more than 4.5 per?
wow - Dozzer
He probably doesn't, the media also thinks Kadri deserves 4.5, Frattin is a top prospect and Scrivens is a young goalie. |

Nor should he. He's playing at a top 10-15 level right now and that's the going rate. I know there might be some of that Edm/Cal hatred going on (it sure seemed to in another thread), but he's earned his salary, IMO.
Is he worth Suter money? No...but if he gets $7m-7.5 he's getting market value. Defensemen like him are valued so high right now. - djamon
People think that players get overpaid in free agency and it's a bit of a myth. To say somebody is overpaid, you have to compare them to the existing contracts, almost all of which were signed in free agency (the only exception being players on entry level deals).
Cap inflation usually levels everything out. So, yes, most free agents do get slightly overpaid in their first year or two, but that's because that inflation gets factored in.
A player getting a four or five year deal today is going to be underpaid by the end of it in most cases. Four years ago, Kessel was very expensive at 5 million per year. He's a steal today. |

I agree, we got some kids in the system that could do very well with Phaneuf as well as long as we keep him for the long haul. Reilly obviously being the main guy with his speed and puck moving ability. Percy also looks like he has the playing style to compliment and be complimented by Phaneuf's game. |

Using some really quick, subjective numbers:
Phaneuf was 11th in Norris voting this year. So let's call him the 11th best defenceman in the NHL.
The eleventh highest paid defenceman (I'm using cap hit) is Kimmo Timmonen - who has a $6 million cap hit. |

Our defense without Phaneuf is a nightmare. Subtract your 25 minute per night workhorse and let Franson get chewed up by Crosby, Ovechkin, Nash, etc... yikes. |
