um... those guys aren't 3rd line
- Big_Lightnin

Neither are Lupul, Kessel or JVR.... So one of those two would have to be on the third line....

If anybody thought the Leafs could get Bernier for ONLY Frattin, Scrivens and a 2nd, EVERYBODY would have said "Do the Trade NOW!!!"

I thought for SURE they wanted a 1st rounder for him.

If you told me this deal was possible after Game 5, I still would have said do it, and that was when REimer saved the series.

It is and EXCELLENT trade that at the very worst upgrades the backup goaltending position.

Bernier's upside is MILES above Frattin's and Scrivens'. Period.

- Big_Lightnin

I get that some people are upset with losing Frattin. I don't have a problem with it. Yeah, he might have tremendous upside.

But Scrivens? Really?

I wish him well. I really do.

I won't miss him.

We shouldn't trade Phaneuf at all unless we are certain we're getting a top Dman that can eat minutes like Dion has in another trade or something. Trading him will be a step back. UNLESS it's a package for a guy like Getzlaf or Eric Staal (which obvs won't happen), our captain needs to stay. As much as he makes his mistakes, nobody is perfect. Everyone makes their mistakes. Nobody within our organization can eat the minutes he can, it's a fact. Bring in a top pairing dman, or something at least close to it to pair with Phaneuf.

but at what cost to re-sign him?

THIS is all I've been getting at. I personally think Frattin is a better winger than all those listed. Not sure how any of them are third liners for sure but Frattin is all of the sudden a fringe NHLer? I just need his position to be filled adequately for me to be ok with this trade.

Grabo could use the space and Clarkson would love to tap in a bunch of crappy goals.

So it is a general assumption that Clarkson is signing here?

That's kind of a weird way to look at it.

Take out Crosby and Malkin and suddenly what were they thinking trading Staal!!???!!!???

Maybe I'm jumping in late and missed the point. Admitting I'm only seeing that one particular reply.

- Juice

And yet you make an excellent point!

Initial point was Frattin wasn't a shoe in to even be in the Leafs lineup come Opening Night.

Then you have Kulimen-Grabo-And who?
- markmark

That's the fun part. Don't know yet.

Ashton/Biggs/Stalberg/BrunnerMcClement/Gordon

Move Kadri to the wing if we get a top line center?

Swing a trade with St.Loius? They seem to have a team full of solid 3rd line typey guys

Ashton's gonna have a camp that make a lot of people forget about Frattin pretty quickly.

quote me on that.

My point is Frattin doesn't leave a huge hole in the lineup. Particularily if they are able to sign Clarkson.

If not, we need to hope somebody steps up. But I have no problem moving Grabo to wing and putting Colborne in the 3C with Kulemin-Colborne-Grabo

like that a lot actually (given what we have.)

The leafs have always had no respect for guys that weren't drafted in the first round, and have passed on many good players for this reason. It's a sad state, especially when I watch teams like Detroit value all assets, and late picks. So many of there top guys were guys they didn't trade away or give up on. People forget, Datsyuk wasn;t a star until he got older, Lidstrom same thing, the LEafs are a hype machine plain and simple.
- aminnes

I think it's more about the Leafs not being able to develop their own players for a long time. When there was no salary cap - they didn't have to.

He made good on his word, but he didn't give him away. Fratiin is a good player, and will only improve with time. I like Bernier, and no, the trade combo doesn't necessarily get them a good d man, I just feel it's a waste of assets that should have been used in combo with others possibly, to get d help. And the message it sends to the guy who has earned his spot isn't so hot either. The optics are crap. NO ONE ON THIS SITE WAS CLAMORING FOR BERNIER UNTIL THIS TRADE. A MONTH AGO, REIMER WAS GREAT AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM, NOW EVERYBODY IS JUST WAITING FOR HIM TO BE TRADED, OR BERNIER USURP HIM, it's total hype in my opinion.

give reimer some credit...these aren't atom tryouts.

I don't see Clarkson as much more than a really good third liner personally. Think he can jump into the top 6 sure, but he's not in the same class as Kessel, lupul, JVR and, jesus, I can't even remember who's on our team anymore.
