He made good on his word, but he didn't give him away. Fratiin is a good player, and will only improve with time. I like Bernier, and no, the trade combo doesn't necessarily get them a good d man, I just feel it's a waste of assets that should have been used in combo with others possibly, to get d help. And the message it sends to the guy who has earned his spot isn't so hot either. The optics are crap. NO ONE ON THIS SITE WAS CLAMORING FOR BERNIER UNTIL THIS TRADE. A MONTH AGO, REIMER WAS GREAT AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM, NOW EVERYBODY IS JUST WAITING FOR HIM TO BE TRADED, OR BERNIER USURP HIM, it's total hype in my opinion.

It's totally hype.
But there's a feeling that the hype with this particular player is merited.
Nobody dislikes Reimer and of course nobody wanted him traded prior to this trade. But in a position that really only has one slot available, it's made Reimer potentially available to trade for the exact assets you mentioned above.

No different than if they traded for a #1 centre...people would start saying "trade grabo" or "don't resign Bozak"

Take out Lupul, Kessel, Kulimen and JVR. Who are the 2 wingers the Leafs have that are better than Frattin?
- markmark

Including Clarkson and Horton?

And don't forget he (frank)ed up a breakaway that would've clinched game 7! All Frattins fault all the Frattin time!

World IIHF 2011, Reimer > Bernier.

Just saying. If he wasn't injured in 2006 he may have been a first round selection as well. For some reason coaches and management don't like him. Maybe competitive nature or lack of it, being as friendly as he is??? Can anyone figure it out? The kid works hard.

Glove hand sucks, not athletic, NO drive or compete level, Dosnt know when to play the puck or hold it, sucks at playing the puck.

I just didn't want to give up Reimer for him or a 1st round pick or a top prospect or two, or give up the assets that we kept hearing trolls tell us we'd be giving up. I view it this way, did I notice the Leafs were worse off or better off with Frattin in the lineup...the answer was a little from column a and a little from column b. Do the Leafs have young forwards that can try and take Frattins spot next year? I think they do. Is Bernier better than Scrivens? I think he is. So, overall, to me, not a loss. It's a hockey trade that offers us huge upside or at least an upgrade on the status quo.

I think my opinion of this trade will be mostly based on the activity over the rest of the summer. A cheap 3rd line winger with 2nd line potential is great for LA, but it would have been great for us as well. As long as the other holes are filled adequately, Ill be happy. Otherwise, this team is no further ahead than last year and are short many top 9 bodies.

entirely possible he ends up a 4th liner there

That's kind of a weird way to look at it.

Take out Crosby and Malkin and suddenly what were they thinking trading Staal!!???!!!???

Maybe I'm jumping in late and missed the point. Admitting I'm only seeing that one particular reply.

I knew this would be the response. You really want to be paying your 3rd line 15-20mil?

Just an odd, lateral trade anyway you look at it for the leafs. Generally you want to avoid turning your goalies into headcases. It's why you typically see veteran/youth tandems or more marked differences in skill lvl. Not sure having two guys who are perceived as up-and-comers (and who've both been waiting for a long time) battling over the same crease is a great idea. Perty sure the loser is gonna get a major case of sour grapes and you're not going to get a whole lot of value for him down the line...

If anybody thought the Leafs could get Bernier for ONLY Frattin, Scrivens and a 2nd, EVERYBODY would have said "Do the Trade NOW!!!"

I thought for SURE they wanted a 1st rounder for him.

If you told me this deal was possible after Game 5, I still would have said do it, and that was when REimer saved the series.

It is and EXCELLENT trade that at the very worst upgrades the backup goaltending position.

Bernier's upside is MILES above Frattin's and Scrivens'. Period.

I remember watching more than one game this season where Reimer was regularly looking for the puck behind him or in the opposite direction of the puck multiple times per night. I'll admit it scared me a little - think of how the coach/GM felt watching that. He came up big multiple times in the season, but he also got "lucky" a lot.

Maybe his faith comes into play - you know, in a Tim Tebow kind of way.... not that there's anything wrong with that.
