I think LA's system does help minimize goalie weakness. If they get Scuderi signed, they have Doughty, Voynov, Greene, Regher, possibly Mitchell back. Scrivens is going to be fine. He is not Bernier in any way shape or form, but he seems to be a serviceable back up, that the Kings are paying only 62K for. :-)
That said Kings do not make the playoff's this year without Bernier. And truth of the matter is Kings lost 2 significant parts the defense, and had to make some significant adjustments. Muzzin was a rooke, Voynov was in year 2 of his NHL career, and the Kings put guys out there like Ellerby & Drewiske.
Bernier's numbers this year are absolutely legit, and based mostly on his ability and not so much on the King system, as could be argued in past seasons. - fsanford
Thanks -- I see this as a win for both sides but there seems to be a bit of estrogen in the air here today |

Phaneuf is not going anywhere IMO. The reports are a distraction so they can deal for another Dman. Nobody wants to deal a high level Dman to Toronto if they think they are going to partner with Dion. If everyone thinks Nonis is looking for a replacement for Dion the price could go down and more ears could be opened.
Reimer will most likely be dealt.
Gardiner is an elite talent who actually scared the Bruins every time he touched the puck. The kid has vision to skate the entire ice. I'm not comparing him to Bobby Orr or Coffey, but I think he will be a future hall of famer.
I'm all for trading our first rounder in this draft for someone who can help now. Grabo and a 1st, along with a young D prospect not named Reilly or Gardiner for Stasny is the most I would pay. - stevecarpetman
Gardiner in the Hall of Fame? Holy Christ man... where do you people come from?

World IIHF 2011, Reimer > Bernier.
Just saying. If he wasn't injured in 2006 he may have been a first round selection as well. For some reason coaches and management don't like him. Maybe competitive nature or lack of it, being as friendly as he is??? Can anyone figure it out? The kid works hard. |

I'm honestly stunned at this. This is a clear win for the Leafs. It isn't even close.
I just don't get it.
absolute worse case scenario they got a BETTER backup than Scrivens, and all it cost was a player who wasn't guaranteed to even make the team next year in Frattin, and a conditional 2nd rounder. - Big_Lightnin
i know.. it screams win for the leafs
scrivens will be 27 to start next season.. frattin 25.. neither are "kids" anymore
guess what? what you see is pretty much what you will get from them moving forward |

A potential-star goalie "trapped" behind a star goalie.
I think its a fine trade, assuming Bernier lives up to the hype. Otherwise, we gave up two assets that we knew what we had in them for the most part for a ?. - markmark
right, we did.
we had a fringe 3rd liner who couldn't crack the lineup the 2nd half of the season, and was not a guarantee to make the team next year, and a backup tender who wouldn't have been in the NHL on more than half the teams in the league.
And I liked both players, but that is reality folks. Leafs gave up nothing that will be missed next year, and brought in a BETTER goalie than they gave up, who has the potential to be Better than Reimer as well.

Flawed logic. The western conference teams don't need to worry about what the lines are on the eastern conference teams so they don't care. Its the same reasoning behind more trades happen with teams outside the division and then outside the conference. If anything the price for a top D would go up if teams think Leafs are looking for a replacement as this makes them look desperate.

I think my opinion of this trade will be mostly based on the activity over the rest of the summer. A cheap 3rd line winger with 2nd line potential is great for LA, but it would have been great for us as well. As long as the other holes are filled adequately, Ill be happy. Otherwise, this team is no further ahead than last year and are short many top 9 bodies. |

And there was a promise to keep. Lombardi, true to his word, told Bernier a year ago that he’d deal him either at the trade deadline or before the draft, a promise he reiterated at the player-exit meetings a few weeks ago, providing he could find a deal that made sense for the Kings.
-Pierre Lebrun article
Draft is this weekend. This was the best offer and it put it to rest. - Big_Lightnin
He made good on his word, but he didn't give him away. Fratiin is a good player, and will only improve with time. I like Bernier, and no, the trade combo doesn't necessarily get them a good d man, I just feel it's a waste of assets that should have been used in combo with others possibly, to get d help. And the message it sends to the guy who has earned his spot isn't so hot either. The optics are crap. NO ONE ON THIS SITE WAS CLAMORING FOR BERNIER UNTIL THIS TRADE. A MONTH AGO, REIMER WAS GREAT AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM, NOW EVERYBODY IS JUST WAITING FOR HIM TO BE TRADED, OR BERNIER USURP HIM, it's total hype in my opinion. |

Read is a UFA next year and will probably be looking for a bigger raise. As well the 500K going back the other way from the Leafs helps with LA's cap something of which the Flyers couldn't do. The Kings got two roster players for a 1 mill cap hit (one of them being a backup) |

The retained salary was a big part. LA has some cap issues, 500K might allow them to keep Scuderi for example. Also Philly cant keep any salary
its easy to see why they went with the leafs offer |

salary retention was the issue. Philly couldn't keep any salary.
LA got Scrivens and Frattin for like $200K cap for something. That's huge for them next ear.

Just an odd, lateral trade anyway you look at it for the leafs. Generally you want to avoid turning your goalies into headcases. It's why you typically see veteran/youth tandems or more marked differences in skill lvl. Not sure having two guys who are perceived as up-and-comers (and who've both been waiting for a long time) battling over the same crease is a great idea. Perty sure the loser is gonna get a major case of sour grapes and you're not going to get a whole lot of value for him down the line... |

The leafs have always had no respect for guys that weren't drafted in the first round, and have passed on many good players for this reason. It's a sad state, especially when I watch teams like Detroit value all assets, and late picks. So many of there top guys were guys they didn't trade away or give up on. People forget, Datsyuk wasn;t a star until he got older, Lidstrom same thing, the LEafs are a hype machine plain and simple. |
