So is LA dumb. Obviously they see something good in those guys. Frattin is 3 years from showing what he can do and he has size speed and good shot, and he back checks. It was a needless trade to an area that is already strong. Before you guys downplay what was given up, the LA Kings wanted those players for a reason, they didn't just trade Bernier away for poops and giggles. - aminnes
this is silly.
LA gets a couple cheap options to fill holes so they can keep their team together.
It worked out perfect for them, they get a 15-20 goal third liner, a serviceable back-up, a pick and of course cap room....
but you are severely downplaying Bernier. He has enormous potential. If you get a chance to attain an asset like that for some spare pieces, you do it. period. |

NO, it was the best deal they could get at this time. They thought anyway, or they would not have pulled the trigger on the deal. - bixll
Exactly, it was the best deal. So if Bernier was sought after, then what the Leafs gave up in the eyes of the Kings was significant. |

I think it was a deal they wanted personally. Frattin adds scoring touch to their anemic 3rd line, and Bernier is wasted playing 12-18 games a year, where scrivens can do just that and put up almost similar numbers. And the 2nd round pick gives them an asset for the next trade deadline when they need another defensive d-man to replace and injured Willie Mitchell or Rob Scuderi. |

These guys broke the trade yesterday. I also recall they broke the Versteeg trade. Not sure of who their sources are. CHFM in conjunction with VOCM, they also cover all of the Ice Caps stuff as well as some local University and Provincial Sports |

At the expense of your guy, that got you where you are? After telling him you believe in him and are going to bring in a vet? wasted assets, D still bad, Bernier and this D is zero improvement. |

sorry for repeating much of what you said. I'm in the middle on Bernier.....I think he can be great, I also think he can just be a good backup to Reimer. But the rest of what you said, I'm all in with you. |

No one is saying we gave up nothing for him. All we're saying is its not a lot for what we potentially acquired and we can replace what we gave up(except the 2nd) very easily. If/when we trade Reimer or Bernier the return we get will make u understand why this was such a great deal. |

Ya they did, there's always a choice. They do get compensation for offer sheets, plus, if Bernier was so sought after, why not more for him? - aminnes
If he signed for $3M per, which he likely would have, LA couldn't afford to match (CAP) and they would only get a 2nd round pick in return as compensation.
They HAD to trade him. That, and Lombardi promised him he would. He kept his word as a GM.
Ergo, no choice.

My sources (tsn radio) are telling me the Avs and Leafs are discussing a major trade with the key pieces being Paul Stastny and Dion Phaneuf.
Personally, I would rather keep Elisha Cuthbert around... - Hockey_Reverend

Look - yes, they liked Frattin. They were asking for Frattin last summer.
But every analyst in hockey thinks this was a good trade for the Leafs. Frattin was a decent B prospect, who may or may not have cracked the lineup next season. You can guarantee me he would have.
I liked him, but losing him is not a big deal. He wasn't going to play in the top 6. |

no, after this year, and it could be Reimer or Bernier who goes.....I mean St. Louis still has halak and elliott, boston had thomas and raask for years......no rush, unless philly calls and makes an unbelievable offer for one of the two which doubtful right now, so go back to eating your sandwich. |

no one's disputing that. They would rather have kept Bernier for $1M a year, but that wasn't an option. So they got a decent deal for him.

Its the classic Leaf fan mentality, oh look at this steal, we raped the Kings Mwa ha ha! Never thinking about the fact that a championship level team felt that these assets were amenable. Nonis hasn't won anything. Lombardi has, so I look at the whole picture and say, obviously LA only makes the trade if it's good for them, they aren't morons. When Boston and Kessel couldn't strike a deal, they didn't give the guy away because they were "forced" to, they made a deal that they liked. The only dumb dumbs that gave away a player for nothing on a hold out type situation was Edmonton with Pronger. |

yzerman realized the error in his ways, depending on one young goalie to carry the workload...lindback couldn't do it.
Hence why he went out and got Bishop.
Now he has a two headed young goaltending tandem.
Nonis acknowledged he needed more than just Reimer and went out and got the other part of his two headed tandem.

Agree, Frattin will be easily replaced by Clarkson or Heatley |
