That's not scouting, though.

He got injured and was never the same.

You could also argue that the game changed - became much faster, and he couldn't keep up. But once again, that's not the fault of scouting - they said he could play in a hook, hold and chop league. And he could.

- Atomic Wedgie

Good point. I have made the change (partly because I feel a little sorry for poor Komi).

the bolded guys are not busts, and Ellerby is still only 24... barely grown into his size yet. way too high for sure, but could easily come around

I said last 10 years not 10 drafts... semantics sure but guys drafted in 2000 and 2001 were being scouted earlier. Scouting got a lot better after 2000.

I deleted your commentary for space... but I get what you're saying.

But again, you're talking on averages, and I'm talking about 1 specific player who was dominating for parts of the season. Hamilton is going to be very very good.

Alzner is the opposite of a bust
- robin_steele264

Alzner at #5, though?

He's a decent defenseman, but there were 210 players selected. For the purposes of examining whether players live up the hype of the draft, I don't think Alzner is a great success story.

If Morgan Rielly turned into Alzner, I didn't think we'd be all that impressed. You expect a #1 defenseman with a top 5 pick. You're not drafting for a solid second pairing guy.

I'd say Hickey is a pretty big bust. He sucks in all ends, is tiny and is a wiener.

Hickey has gotta be a bust.

If he's not then there are no busts and the term is invalid.

If we knew with certainty what Can Barker would become, would anybody in his right mind draft him at #3? The guy couldn't even crack the Edmonton Oilers' top six.

Brian Lee at #9 is not a bust?

The guy eats popcorn in Tampa Bay's press box for a career. For a top 10 pick, he's a bust.

The original argument was whether or not Hamilton could fill Chara's place. The odds of Hamilton living up to his draft ranking are worse than a coin flip if history is any indication.

And why are the late 90's invalid? If you look last those years, you'd see that scouting looked pretty damn good back then, too. There were years when over half the first rounders played long careers. That's more than you could say about some of today's drafts.

Do you guys think there is anyone in the 4-7 draft spots willing to move it? (NAS, CAR, CAL and EDM)

Id be willing to move Gardiner + #21 + if it meant a shot at either Monohan or Barkov.

Edit: This is also assuming Reilly isn't too far off.
