Joe Thornton would help the Rangers in three ways. First, they need another bonafide first line player, which they lost when Gaborik got traded and Richards forgot how to play the game. Second, the Rangers need size and he provides that. And third, I think he would fit great with Nash, and sign some beast to play on the left side to dig out pucks for those guys and take up space in front of the net. - Pete V
I would like Joe Thornton as well. Nash and Thornton have shown they have great chemistry. Just would depend on the cost. The Rangers do need another top line player though. They're in the same situation they were in last year before they got Nash. At least at that time though they had Richards playing well. Now they have Nash, no Gaborik and Richards playing like a shell of himself. Hopefully if Richards is kept, he returns to form but they still need another top flight offensive addition to take the pressure off of Nash.

The problem with adding Thornton is that were still thin in the sniper department... jury is still out on Kreider. Pipedream?
Apparently Torts and AV have spoken every other day for the past two weeks. Too smart guys that know that they can help each other.
And on a related note, Torts was so humble and self evaluative in his presser today, almost made me feel bad for hating on him the past couple months. - Pete V
You definitely get the feeling he's still smarting from his firing, we'll see how long the kinder, gentler Torts lasts.
I like those lines except maybe I would swap Hagelin with Clowe. Clowe probably has some familiarity with Thornton as well and could be the muscle and net presence for that line while Thornton sets up Nash to fire away.

Reason why I still have Clowe on third line is because if we have Hagelin there it will make that line kinda small. Its not to say that Clowe wont get some shifts with Nash.
This is all fantasy though... theres no way we can fit Clowe, Thornton and Ryder onto the team this year with the cap where it is.
The only thing we can do to facilitate this is to buy out Richards, resign Clowe and sign Ryder this year. Then make a run for Thornton next off season when the salary cap increases.

i may be in the minority but i think boyle is gonna score 15+ next season. he seemed to play with more confidence and remembered how to shoot the puck in the playoffs and maybe that carries over into next season. i think he needs to be a winger tho and play on the 4th line.

i like it but i don't see thornton coming here. first off, he's still under contract for another year right? and when he does become a FA i think he'll just resign in SJ but for less. they're gonna be a contending team and thornton still has some good hockey years left.

My understanding is SJ wants to move Thornton and Marleau to get younger.

what do you think it would take? MDZ as a starting block?
also, i read torts' comments from vancouver today. one thing that stuck out to me was that he said that he's proud of how he changed the culture of the organization in terms of how they prepare, the use of youth, and the characters of the players we go after.

Well, one of the regular SJ fans said it would probably cost 2 prospects and a 1st round pick...
He proposed Fast, Bourque and a 1st in 2015 or 2016...
Thing is, we want to keep Clowe if we get Thornton, problem is... Thornton makes more than Richards (333k more)... and were tight pocketed as it is. Only way we can do it is if McDonagh and Stepan take team friendly deals, however considering we want to lock them both up for 8 years, its highly unlikely.

we could trade 1 or 2 of pyatt or asham which can free up to over $3 mil in cap space i think.

We would have to get rid of 2 of Pyatt, Powe or Asham to make it work. If we can cut all 3, we might be able to sign Hendricks.... Boyle, Hendricks, Dorsett as a 4th line.
If not, we can leave Boyle as 4th line center, and have Haley play the wing.
I think it's crazy, but it actually makes a whole lot of sense at the same time.
I think both teams needed the exact opposite coach than they had and it's just worked out perfectly. - jimbro83
I think Torts thought he was untouchable here, and I think he got humbled when they canned him. Maybe he has realized that you cant be a stubborn wiener 24/7 and sometimes you have to bend a little.
