ha ha thats what I was thinking when I read that

It doesn't matter what it takes to sign Giroux, you sign him to the 8 year deal. It's that simple. There is absolutely no excuse not to and I think everyone in here knows that is what will happen. Cornerstone franchise player/captain.

Im sorry, to me it doesn't matter if he's averaging a ppg. He is average, if that, defensively; and if I'm paying out that kind of money I want a guy that plays his heartb all all 3 zones. I know he's trying to get better defensively, but to get that kind of money, to me at least, you have to be one of the premier forwards in all 3 zones. Again, this is all my opinion.
- fecondo

We'd just have to agree to disagree, because IMO, you don't have to pay every single guy to a Selke Trophy candidate.

Wayne Gretzky was an average defensive player, especially down low. Mario Lemieux backchecked sporadically. Steven Stamkos has been a minus player in three of his five seasons, with a high of plus-7.

Defense is great. But at the end of the day, you don't win games 0-0.

Don't quote me on this, but I think, repeat THINK, I saw something like $8.9 million.

I could be wrong. I do know that Corey Perry and Ryan Getlaf signed for identical salaries of $8.25 million per, and it could be argued pretty easily that Claude Giroux at 25 years old, heading into (likely) an eight-year deal, is worth Ryan Getzlaf money.

- AllInForFlyers

Flyers could start the salary at the top end of the deal and reduce over the 8 years so that G gets more money early on as opposed to those deals.

I really hope the Flyers find a way to get this kid Darnell Nurse. He is going to be a beast.

I get your point, but all i was trying to say is that i want to see more effort defensively from Giroux. Imean we had a ppg center who was better defensively, in Richards, and we traded him for the right package. I want Giroux to evolve into the type of player that no one ever dreams of trading. That was more along the lines of what i was trying to say

As long as management is patient the cup is coming. Just have to wait a few years.

Exactly -- I think Jonathan Toews is a great two-way player and he absolutely deserves to be the captain of the Blackhawks.

But that goal Patrick Kane scored to end the Los Angeles Kings' season off that rush with Toews in overtime is what I'm talking about -- there are guys who can score goals, and there are guys who are elite offensive players.

Elite offensive players need to get paid. Because those guys end games as fast as anyone and quicker than most.

If/when Bryz gets bought out, I really don't want them to use any assets to get another goalie other then of course salary. I just don't see a goalie out there, that is a must have. Get an UFA goalie to go along with Mason and give Mason the opportunity to find himself. He has all the tools to be an elite goalie, hopefully he is mentally ready for the challenge.

For me...I think Claude Giroux's defensive intensity is there, his effort. I disagree that he is a poor defensive player. His work on the PK is actually pretty strong.

I just think I want 93-point Claude Giroux at plus-6 more than I want 76-point Claude Giroux at plus-20.

Because, again, he's a first-line center with elite skill. He needs to score against the top defenders in the world. Yes, I want him to backcheck, to care about defense, because it matters. But at some point, you need a guy to score goals, or set up goals, and if he picks the right spots to take those offensive chances, that's what you need to have happen.

I don't disagree completely, but I want him to be responsible in his own end against premium opponents. His skill defenensively is awesome when he wants it to be. I want him to want it all the time

Giroux is always trying to get better at everything. That's part of what makes him a special player. And as I've said before, he's shown flashes of defensive excellence. I just hope they can get him signed for 7.5 before his defensive game takes off it his worth becomes around 8.5-9

Anyone want to toss me a few numbers that would support the NHL being better than the NBA
- shifty28

Yeah... I won $510 on playoff hockey pools, lost $50 on NBA pool
