They are a very good, very tight band. But the whole, "look how free spirited/salt of the earth/hipster/outside the mainstream looking we are" just rubs me the wrong way because it is so obviously manufactured.

not to sound all trendyish and in the know or anything, but they are becoming a sore subject for me. they are extremely talented, but i cant stand the fact that now every 17 year old girl all of a sudden believes that they are a free spirit/singer songwriter addict because they heard them on q102
- stayinthefnnet

I feel like their songs are written by a cabal of musical actuaries, who carefully design these perfectly generic songs, with the right blend of folkiness, feelingsness, and hard rock edge to appeal to the greatest number of listeners. They even swear on calculatedly rare occasions, just to show they have an edge.

I think what I'm trying to say is their music feels manufactured. I don't doubt they have talent.

From Rust In Peace? Literally every song is great, imo. Otherwise, I'm somewhat familiar with their older catalog, and picky about new stuff.
- BulliesPhan87

Old school Megadeth is legit, I agree with newer stuff.

Sort of like The Monkees, if they were made up of brilliant musicians?

Interesting choice

I go

1. Cant you hear me knocking
2. She's a rainbow
3. Monkey man

- Just5

Agreed on Can't You Hear Me Knocking. I go with Gimme Shelter and Sway as my other two, but it's a tough choice. Lots of good ones.

It's not even like the new stuff is bad, but I listen to it and I hear Dave Mustaine going to work, making music because that's his job. Yawn, boring.

I find myself pulled more toward long, heavy/hard hitting instrumental songs that I can just turn on and get lost in. As I get older I realize most lyrics are inane, especially for contemporary songs...and that's being kind.

So here are two bands with a fair amount of material available and some good heavy tunes:

Russian Circles: Harper Lewis.

Pelican: The Creeper.

Now all we need is the Mumford & Sons show. Probably a prime time soap opera.

I almost that that impression with Death Magnetic, but it represents such a huge step back in the right direction (after St. Anger) that I have to call it a good album.

I think Marty Friedman is most of what made Megadeth great. His guitar work was incredible.
