Did he mention how many times he was told they'd offer sheet Stamkos?

I wouldn't call anyone in Metallica great at anything. I'd call them plain old mediocre. But that's just a personal opinion. Don't care for them, or that type of music.

I like Metallica. They're a good band, and good musicians. But when they leave their comfort zone, the music suffers. Also, as far as playing live goes, they've lost a couple of MPH off the fastball.

Or... maybe a band that drops solos and cuts their hair because their A&R guy tells them that's the only way they'll keep selling records.

IMO, it's been nothing but downhill after Kill 'Em All.

- Tomahawk

ride the lightning, master of puppets, and and justice for all are all incredible albums.

even the black album has some merit for what it was.

even their later era stuff, i dont loathe the music as much a i loathe the mentality behind it. i get musical evolution. but when its done for the wrong reasons, it bothers me.

and there is no justification for the putting out of the movie/documentary some kind of monster.

definitely have. having to play everything downtuned a half step in order for hetfields voice to keep up definitely is noticeable

I actually like most of their stuff. I mean, St. Anger and at least half of Load and Reload can be thrown in the garbage, but otherwise I think it's all pretty good.

That said, the chest hair has really fallen off since Justice.

Metallica is arguably the most influential band of the past 30 years, and Hetfield’s sound is the hugest part of that band, which is really saying something. From the beginning with Kill Em’ All, Hetfield’s righthand precision, speed, and power would set a standard that all aspiring metal rhythm guys would struggle to match. “Maybe it’s the German in me,” says Hetfield, “but I always want the rhythms to be precise. It’s hard to escape. It’s how I play.” The other thing that Hetfield popularized was the way to get the maximum heaviness out of riffs. “Downpicking is the key!” he exclaims. “It’s tighter sounding and a lot chunkier.” Who are we to argue?
- youarewrong

Does influential mean great player? The Ramones were influential, yet were hardly great musicians. Guys like Allan Holdsworth are brilliant musicians that few people have ever heard of.

And if you only want to play metal, Hetfield's a great choice. I don't just want a metal band.

Great work Frank.

He's not, though. Keith Richard is a brilliant rhythm guitarist. Townshend is a great rhythm guitarist, even though technically he's a lead guitar in The Who. Stone Gossard is a very good rhythm guitarist.

I wouldn't call Hetfield a great rhythm guitarist. He plays thrash well, sure.

Claypool, Burton, Entwhistle, Steve Harris, Chris Squire-all superior to Butler.

- Jsaquella

there is nothing necessarily wrong with the guitarists you listed, but i just have a hard time seeing how someone like gossard is better than hetfield. i realize it is very difficult to quantiy "better" when dealing with musicians, but still.

and as far as bassists go, harris was/is incredible. literally was like a fusion of guitar and drums for that band in one powerful method of playing

Actually, Some Kind of Monster seems interesting to me, I don't think it was so much made by them as it was made about them. But the image change since the the black album hasn't been a good one. At all.

Agreed 100%. I saw Metallica in 2004, and they actually had to take some of the tougher riffs out of songs at the end of the show.

Basically, I think when Hetfield's not playing "metal" he-and his band-are pedestrian.

To me, a rhythm guitarist is like a stay at home defenseman-you don't notice him unless he makes a mistake. I've seen Pearl Jam, 20+ times, and Gossard goes out and just sounds great every night.

yeah, to me, influential isnt synonymous at all with better or talented. they may coincide, but thats not always the case. cobain couldnt play guitar out of a wet paper bag, but he was influential as hell. the ramones are a great example as well.

i will say this though, that metal, at least how it used to be, required a great deal of skill. to be proficient in that genre is typically a good indicator of a large amount of skill. to me, what gossard is required to put out on any given song, isnt more technically demanding than what hetfield is.

and while i admit i do like metal a ton, i am by no means a metal only diehard
