Tell Columbus that adding a player of Jeff Carter's caliber has "a very definite effect."
- AllInForFlyers

The difference between adding Carter to the Blue Jackets and the Kings is the difference between polishing a turd and polishing a Cup.

You could say that about many players... but since you mention that... Carter was scoring at a 32 goal clip in his season with CBJ... one where he was visually and audibly unhappy about.

Adding players of Carter and Richards caliber doesnt have a quasi-mystical effect... It has a very definite effect.
- jak521

I get what AllIn is saying, though.

Some people point to Carter and Richards being added to the Kings and point to the Cup win as evidence that the Kings were run away winners of the deal.

Sure Carter and Richards helped. They formed a very solid second line and gave scoring depth to the Kings,

But they didn't play as big a role as Quick, Brown, Kopitar, Doughty, etc.

Adding a very good player to a bad team doesn't make them a Cup team. Adding a very good player to an already very good team, can. And it did.

That proves that he's a contributor to an already existing team with talent, not a leading player that you build around to become that team.

The Flyers had 102 points the season after Richards and Carter were gone. They don't miss them. They miss Chris Pronger, who is truly a difference-maker.

They played a huge role nonetheless. And it really doesn't have anything to do with who won the trade. Good deals for both sides.

And they lost in the first round in the playoffs. Are you really going to argue that the Flyers didnt take a step back as a team in the short term by making those trades? They went from a Cup team to what? And Pronger getting injured was certanly a factor there. I think you're giving Carter and Richards less credit then the deserve in what they did for LA.

Giroux is MOST DEFINITELY not above average defensively. He is average on his best nights, and below average in most nights. He tends to lose his men in the defensive zone and rarely busts his ass getting deep on the defensive zone back check. He will improve, and he has over the course of his career, but overall he is NOT anything more than an average defender.
- MBFlyerfan

Well, which is it? Above average of blow average? He's been placed in a tone of defensive situations over the past number of seasons, even with Richards around. He was inserted instantly since joining the Flyers at a very young age. Top pair PK's with Richards and Talbot (Our special teams have been a bright spot for the Flyers). He's been taking the brunt of defensive situations. So do we have better or are we just bad defensively?

Richards and Carter could blend in with the Kings and weren't asked to be the faces of the franchise the way they were in Philadelphia.

Those jobs belonged to Kopitar, Dustin Brown, etc.

I completely forgot about that. Kind of funny in the same game so much was being made of the Rinaldo/Crombeen fight in the same game early. Crombeen started it, Rinaldo tuned him and only gave him a shot or 2 on the way down. St.Louis was saying something to Briere about it. It was talked about during intermission by everyone. Then Lecavalier actually does punch Talbot while he's down the same game and you hear nothing about it. Weird what people choose to see.
- dingo8urbaby

I believe they also brought Rinaldo's actions up on HNIC that week while ignoring Saint Vinny's.

The Flyers are having to misuse Giroux in far too many defensive situations simply because he is the only viable faceoff option. Giroux should be used the majority of times in offensive situations. One of the big problems with the Flyers.
