Homer just got off the phone with Ryan Clowe's agent...
(sorry peeps, no Bobby Ryan in this years crystal ball)

If Clowe is a Flyer, thumbs up, or thumbs down ?

- MrBigglesworth

Thumbs down because he is basically a lesser version of Hartnell and Simmonds.

You see a player like Shaw contributing to the Hawks. That's why I think the Flyers need to give a legitimate look to a player like Tye Mcginn.
- MJL

No, they need to spend all of their young assets and picks on acquiring Bobby Ryan. That's the only sane solution.

Uh, no we haven't? Shea Weber was inked to an offer sheet on July 19, and matched on the 24th. Most of the offseason had been resolved. So there was no offseason since we took a shot at Weber.

EDIT: Leight

Oh, my apologizes. I didn't realize the offseason ends on July 24th and the new season begins July 25th. Excuse me.

I don't see why we need Ryane Clowe.

What does he bring that Hartnell and Simmonds don't already do?

- johndewar

Adds another physical presence on the Wing who is good in board battles. Which is a need of the team. Just don't know if he would be worth the money. I would not be surprised if he is a target for the Flyers.

That's not what he's saying. The offseason has not yet begun. The Off Season starts on July 5th. Or technially, it's the start of the 13/14 Season.

How many contract years have elapsed since July 25th? Circumstances haven't really changed since then. Most impact moves were already made by that point. I'm simply saying that it'll be more effective to make these kind of judgments after this offseason.

expect the Clowe signing ASAP!

I'm breaking it first. I know a guy who knows a guy who's sister's neighbor's gardner is bff's with Clowe's agents hairdresser.

Depends on the cost and what else happens. If they Sign Clowe because they traded another forward for defense or goalie help, I'd be OK with it, so long as it's not an asinine salary cap hit.

Clowe isn't a player I think about going after. I'm sorry but that huge lack of scoring for more then half a season looks really bad to me.

And that was a choice of the team. They weren't forced to do any of that. I don't see it as desperation.
- MJL

No, they weren't forced. But I do think they jumped the gun and ended up paying more than they would have had they waited. By most accounts there wasn't huge interest in Bryzgalov by other teams. At least not 9 years 50 plus million interest. Add to that what Vocoun ended up signing for and maybe (in Hindsight) they could have been a little more patient and still had a good chance of signing him for less years at less cap hit.

Maybe Snider over reacted, (in my opinion he did). Hopefully they learned a valuable lesson from that.

I understand the whole, "they targeted their guy and went and got him" mantra. But in this case I think it was a mistake.

He gets concussed more often.

Clowe is the last UFA Philly should be spending money on.

Was he hooked or did he dive?
Or did both happen with him diving after the hook to draw attention?
The diving/embellishment penalty never gets called by itself, they always send both players off.

Makes a good argument to video review some of these penalty calls.
I think they are planning on vid review for all the 4 min high sticking penalties.
Why not do all the calls and get it right?

I'd rather spend the money elsewhere or on a different type of forward.

I think the context of the previous offseason is important, too. I won't be the first to say they're "chasing last year's cup", so to speak, but they went from feeling Leighton was fine and that goaltending wasn't the focus, to suddenly feeling they had to solidify the position as well as possible at all expense. It was a dramatic shift of priority, and it was in the blink of an eye.

And we failed trying to make an impact move, To Be Fair. Again I'll ask, who is an available top defender out there the Flyers should target? We as fans normally know who our targets are going to be before they even get here. Timonen was rumoured by Eklund weeks before he got here. The Flyers chasing after Weber was a hot topic for over a year. If we're lucky enough to get a top defender, it will finally be nice to be surprised but it's unlikely because all the best are locked up, franchise players.

I agree, Clowe is not nearly as skilled as Hartnell or Simmonds...

That said, it really doesnt matter. He wont cost us any assets and Homer was sweet on him a few years back (when he was still potting lots of Pavelski/Couture rebounds)

Carter is still going to score more points then Voracek.
- Jimmygrazz

Based on what?

Voracek is 24 years old
Carter is 28 years old

I would do that trade 100 times over straight up , ignoring anything else that came from it.

Well if they buyout Bryzgalov, then it's valid certainly to call it a mistake. I don't beleive that if they had waited, that the contract would have looked any different. I think Bryzgalov had his demands, and that's what it took to sign him.

The deal was extended to lower the Cap hit. If they had wanted to sign him to a 5 year deal, they were looking at a Cap hit of over 7M.
