Sorry dude, this is going to go down as one of the best trades in Leafs history. Its an absolute steal and LA has made a terrible trade. Thanks for the comedy though.
- Jimmy_Tea

Thank you. You can't please every fan. Probably the same fans that thought the Phaneuf trade wasn't a steal either.

We aren't talking about a goaltender who was even close to beating out Quick.
We aren't talking about Cory Schneider here (Luongo). This is Jonathon Bernier. He couldn't touch Quick and now he;s dealt so he can get a shot. He's unproven at best.
Reimer is still the leafs best goalie.

Um, Bernier was the Kings 1B going into camp 2 years ago until Quick went 12-3 to start the season. Not much of a chance for him in LA after that.

The one thing about Bernier is he never gets rattled or thrown off his game.

The Leafs are going to end up very pleased with this trade. The fans in LA know how good he is and now it's time for the fans in Toronto to have a guy who will lead you to the playoffs again.

I know i'll be watching a lot more Leafs games next season.

Uhhhhhh.....Reimer just led them to the Playoffs this season and he was hands down the team MVP (Regular season and playoffs).....but I see what you're trying to get at.

Bernier over the last 2 seasons under the Kings defensive system averaged 22 shots per game, Reimer has averaged 30 shots per game over the same period, we will now see how Bernier does with the Leaf D in front of him. I think he will end up being Reimer's backup, but of corse he will get paid more.

Can anyone say Toskala 2.0? Nonis is an idiot. Luongo would have given him six solid years as a legit no.1(including this past season when they might have beat Boston with him) and then mentored whoever was coming up in the process to take over.instead he takes a flyer on someone unproven and paid more for the privilege.bernier and nonis won't be there in five years.Luongo will outlast both of them wherever he goes next.

well ya... his contract kinda makes that a given

Question for Leafs fans on here: How many of you HONESTLY stayed up until 10 o'clock Eastern time to watch an LA Kings game when Bernier started this year? None of you? That's what I thought. Why else would you think Bernier is some average goalie even though he was 9-3-1 with a 1.88 GAA ???

I can't wait until 2 years from now when he is one of the top goalies in the league and you're all saying he's better than Quick.

I really wish he went somewhere else because you fans obviously don't appreciate or deserve him.

The guy is EASILY going to be better than Reimer, starting next next year.

Frattin wills core 20+ next year for the Kings.
Bernier is not a proven NHL starter. He's played a total of 62 games in the NHL since being drafted 6 years ago, and has never played ore than 25 in a season.

He is NOT Jonathon Quick.

- B-Wforever

I'll honestly be pretty surprised if Frattin even makes the team

He wasn't even a regular in the Leafs lineup.

Hate this deal, that the leafs also kept 500k in cap makes it that much worse.
You always say the team that gets the best player wins the deal.
Matt Frattin is the best player in this deal.

well now you've stepped in it. If they had Bernier they would have lost game 5 when they gave up 17 and 19 shots in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

I doubt he's ever faced 19 shots in a period in his career.

Reimer does it once a week.

But if Reimer is the answer, why did your GM get Bernier?

Do you think they are planning on packaging him up in another deal?

A third line player, an undrafted minor league starter/backup goalie and a 2nd round pick for a young starting goalie/former first rounder pick sounds like a good deal to me. The Leafs now have something many teams do not, 2 young NHL goalies with some talent.

great blog.
great trade.
in a years time, one of the two goalies will emerge as a bonifide number one.
frattin is easily replaced.

Adam: Now that Bernier is a Maple Leaf; he is still RFA. Does that mean that the Islanders or another team could offer sheet him and potentially screw Toronto over?

I think it would be pretty tough for them to screw over Toronto. Under 3.5/year match. If they go above that, weigh out what the plan is and either match the offer or take compensation. You either get Bernier at fair term or you get a minimum of a 1st and a 3rd. So you gave up a 2nd, a 4th (Frattin) and Scrivens didn't cost you anythng as he was a undrafted FA for a 1st and a 3rd and you still have your other young goalie that had a top 10 SV% in the league and was your team saviour last year.

Until he signs a contract, he's an RFA. The rules applied don't change. However, if someone wants to give him a ton of money in order for the Leafs not to match, I'd gladly take the mandatory compensation draft picks in return

Bernier said he wants to play in Toronto. Why would he sign an offer sheet from another team? People get too hung up on offer sheets around here and forget the player doesn't HAVE to sign one just because someone gives him one.
