I think Nonis is going for the idea of having two very good young guys who are still 5 years away from their prime... I can't fault him here, though I would have preferred to send someone other than Frattin... - lumlums

Luongo is a starter, Bernier a backup...has nothing to do with Luongo being traded. |

No way... roll with the young tandem, let them fight each other for number one. No need to trade a goalie when the combined cost will likely be less than $5m for them both. - lumlums
exactly.
Nonis has got himself a tandem, once Bernier is signed for likely under 4M$/season.
Gillis was going bonkers right now (which is exactly why Nonis did this). |

using your best common sense...
does anyone happen to know the rules around trading an unsigned RFA... in other words, can the Leafs still turn-around and deal Bernier before he's signed? (I think so)...
or is Nonis waiting on the offer sheet from Philly.... what do you get for a 3.5M dollar a year goal-tender? - BorjeFan4Ever
Are you on crack? Why would the Leafs trade their potential franchise player? This is like the day we got Gilmour, Phaneuf and Kessel. AMAZING> |

Having A goalie contervercy is never good ..., and the toronto media will go crazy - The_Vark
There's less of a controversy when you have such a young duo with low cost... its a controversy when you give a guy $50m plus and then bench him |

Goaltending wasn't the issue last year, horrid defense was so this trade makes little sense. Had it been made during the years of Toskala and Raycroft, obviously I'd be fine with that but when you have a goalie putting up a 920 save % with awful defense...... what's the point?
The only thing I don't like about Reimer's game is how prone he is to injury and his rebound control but was that enough to give up on him? I'm not so sure.
I honestly doubt Bernier could put up better numbers with the defense Reimer had to contend with last year. Guy faced the most point blank shots in the league. - Sheppy99
The SCF's aren't even over yet. You know those things called the draft and free agency? Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, there's still time to get better before the season starts in OCTOBER. |

its the Canucks, so its a past time, not really a job because the outcome doesn't matter. |

Reimer and Gunnar for Dipietro (or however the depressed emotional Italian spells it) and Strome. - optimus-reim
The leafs should trade for a bad contract to buy out. With the money they make they could buy some assets right now. Dipietro being a target.

I am also a bit stunned that the devils let this guy slip away...they have to make a decision soon in net...he woulda been a good addition for them |

That makes no sense. Luongo is on a ten year, massive contract. They will be lucky to give him away. The Leafs trade has nothing to do with it.
Lets be clear: This is one of the best trades in Leafs history and an absolutey insane steal on par with the Phaneuf hiesting. This is the day we became cup contenders. - Jimmy_Tea

Reimer is a great 40 game a season goaltender, he's not cut out to play a whole season, endurance wise, which limits his ability to become a surefire #1 goaltender in the NHL. Once he plays more games than he physically or mentally can, his stats suffer, and so does his play. So pumped for this trade, if both of these young goaltenders can keep up their level of play, we will arguably have the best goaltending tandem in the league for years to come. Couldn't think of a better place for Bernier to come, split the season down the middle with Reimer, and ease into his workload, 41 games each. This trade will benefit both of our now goaltenders. So glad we got rid of Scrivens, will probably be out of the league within the next 2-3 years, same goes for Frattin, hardworker, but more of a plug type player if you ask me. Awesome trade, one of the best I've seen the Leafs make in a while, a bright future ahead.
Not to mention, great insurance for when Reimer goes down with his yearly injury. |

Mike Smith is a product of his environment. Imagine him behind the NJ defensive juggernaut? Even Hedberg stays in the NHL with the Devils. Lou will get an established proven #1 and not a project.
