Agreed. Losing Phaneuf for a forward is a major step backwards.
- Tee-Dot

^^This.....Like him or not Dion is the big minute guy on that D. He needs help, not to be traded.

Losing dion wouldn't be so bad. Rielly and Gards are the future. Get some old bum like streit or souray to help them develop

set us up for a great pick in 2014 too
- Big_Lightnin

It sure does.

I think Pittsburgh found out what happens when you load up at forward and completely neglect the need for defense.

All the offensive talent in the world can't help you if you're getting pinned in your own end for 80% of the game and getting chewed up by opposing defensemen for the other 20%.

Scrivens wanted to be a #1 too. Still had 2 young goalies who both wanted to be #1's. Difference is, now it's actually a realistic challenge.

One of them will be a true #1 by next summer, and the other will likely be moved. Either way, goaltending will be better next season.

Any decent Vet goalie would have cost about the same package, unless it's a UFA signing. Especially after Vokoun - market just went up on these guys.

Personally I think Bernier has a higher ceiling than Reimer, but Reimer just keeps embracing challenges and putting up great numbers. No reason to think that won't happen again. Then Bernier becomes a tradable asset. Win-win. Still more valuable than Frattin and Scrivens.

- Big_Lightnin

Scrivens always dreamed to be a backup goalie, it was his life goal. He and Brian Boucher give secret high-fives to one another while Ty Conklin watches.

I hope Berniers really good. I just hope it doesn't turn into an unnecessary sideshow either, cause truth is, goaltending was a non issue last year. Seems strange. I have a feeling Bernier may be moved. NJ is super old in net and would probly love one of these two. If Reimer goes, Bernier better be good or it'll be "Fire Nonis" before too long.

Frattin isn't a 22yo kid... he's closer to 26 is he not???
he can skate, and shoot the puck, but as inconsistant as any player that
was on the leafs roster.... and he is replaceable.

- aries1976

Agreed. I always said the Leafs should have used him as trade bait. However a top center or a top 4 d man should have been a higher priority than a trading Frattin for a goalie.

I would love to have the 7th pick..but I dont know how we could replace Dion...even as brain dead as he is sometimes. I think the team might take a step back next season...maybe not

i think Oilers fan laugh in your face for that offer though

- senstroll

It'd be hard to replace. But remember we're going into next year with, at the very least, far superior options in net. Both in Bernier, and a Riemer who's proven to himself what he can accomplish in the playoffs.

We'd certainly have a hard time without Dion. Yet, this will be an opportunity for guys like Gardiner and Franson to really cement themselves as top-tier Dmen.

Another thing I find assuring is that unlike the previous 5 years, we saw how big a difference a decent PK can do for a team's GA. And I really don't know how much of an impact Dion had on our team's shots-against stat, but I bet he didn't help.

Don't think #3 will help a problem like that but that's just me and a pile of other people

How about Taylor Hall for Phaneuf? We get our first line center and you get your defensive leader.

Lehnar's a gem. Huge and real competitor.

Markstrom's taking a little longer to get up there but he will make it.

Bernier...hard to say...I don't doubt his talent, but it's gonna take more than talent to suceed in T.O.

Ha ha, it's more that Bernier wanted a trade "to be a number one". Especially what Nonis is saying to Reimer, good job but we've brought this guy in who's sole purpose is to steal your job. And I realize every goalie is trying to win the job every night, but after all the veteran backup talk it seems strange. I think he's trading one of them.

Heck yes! Just make sure to grab a Scuderi and someone else to shore things up.
