Can Bobby Ryan play LW?
- JAKEw1234

You'll find out if that's the spot the Ducks will use him next year.

They maybe, we don't know..........They should look at everything, no option should ever be closed.

Homer has always liked reclamation projects on the roster- Zherdev, Emery, Mason, etc. I wouldn't be shocked to see someone similar added this offseason.

Wasn't that Clarkie? But a great name from the past. How about "Fat" Pat Falloon?

Not again.

That line looks good. How about the rest of the roster?

- hereticpride

With the rumored trade.. move Coburn & 11th

Ryan - Giroux - Voracek
Hartnell - Schenn - Simmonds
Read - Couturier - Gagne
Rinaldo - Talbot - Rosehill

Kimmo - Schenn
Streit - Grossman

At this point, you have a very good young core on offense and can begin to rebuild the defense. That entire offensive core (ryan, giroux, voracek, hartnell, schenn, read, couturier, talbot) would all be together for the next 3 years.

I'd be all for that rumored deal.

Timo not what he use to be

Mez is always hurt

Streit just signed

Gus hasn't been given a full season to play at the NHL level.

- stveshdy

defense won't get hurt so friggin much with a goalie that can move the puck out quickly so the D doesn't have to drive in deep and get crushed on the boards. Mason's puck moving will actually help the defenders from taking punishment. Something Bryz doesn't give a Rats Arse about.

Now that is a solid description of a soft player.
- MJL

I'm not asking you to prove anything, I really want to know why you think a soft dman is a soft dman other than "because they are."

In my opinion anyone who blocked as many shots as Carle did, is not a soft player in my book.

I would classify a guy as soft if he actively avoids contact
constantly gets outworked because of LACK OF EFFORT, and does not sacrifice himself to block shots.

- MBFlyerfan

I would say yes, Carle is a bit soft, but for me, it's not that he doesn't lay "big hits" on people or whatever....rather, he seems to lack that killer instinct that the better D men have, to apply the body when necessary to defend effectively. Carle has a tendency to back off from oncoming attackers, then relying on his good stick to block shots (most of his blocks are done with his stick -- it's not like he's out there blocking pucks at all costs, like Lappy or something)...when it works, it's ok, but there are times when some of the better players take advantage of that space he gives them (and his attention to the puck) to deke around him and get into dangerous areas. Sometimes you need to body up on a guy to stop him. Timonen or Pronger or Schenn, those guys have that ability...I suppose it involves some extra physical assertiveneess that Carle doesn't seem to have. Also, I think one can see some softness in his coverage down low. Sometimes you have to battle to make sure the opponent doesn't get favorable positioning in the slot and around the net, Carle seems pretty physically passive in those situations, often allowing the opponent to get into and maintain dangerous position. One more thing I can think of, is he's not really a battler along the boards...he's strong on his skates and can usually avoid getting knocked around, but he rarely asserts himself enough physically to win puck battles and sometimes seems to take a lackadaisical approach to getting to loose ones.

So, yeah, in those respects, I would say I can understand how Carle could be considered "soft" by some. Others may not consider those things when deciding whether or not a player could be called "soft"...for some it might be all about big hits or something -- it's a subjective thing I guess.

Scuderi and Ference IMO are better Dmen than Coburn, dont have a problem with it.

seems like everybody loved Coburn and Bryz, what happened?

I think its time we settle this once and for all.

W...T...F does soft mean? Because it seems my definition and others definitions are not the same.

It seems to me that if a guy does not run people through the wall, and fight, they get labeled soft. And in my opinion that is just idiotic.

I guess by their definition Nik Lidstrom is soft. Kimmo is soft. Eric Dejardins was soft.

Give me a break.

- MBFlyerfan

Perfect examples of guys who weren't necessarily known as big physical hitters, but who were still capable of stepping up to close the gap and use their body to prevent an attacker from coming freely over the blueline, or when to ride a guy off and/or pin him to the boards to take him out of the play. Carle doesn't really do much of that kind of body work.

Good luck rebuilding the D with no 1st rounder and a top 4 D man on the verge of retiring. Sorry, That is not a team I have interest in watching.

I've said this a million times now it seems. Take away the hometown factor and Bobby Ryan's name rarely, if ever gets mentioned in rumors with this team and its current needs.

Nope, He sucks at it. He's a statue. Mason is very good at it. Just a plus for Mason, like his quickness, youth, contract and demeanor. Not saying he's a better goalie though.

agree - the hometown factor is just an annoyance imo - i want ryan in philly because he's versatile on the wings (LW.RW), scores 30 goals/season, only 26 years old, good size, and is responsible on d.

I'll say it for you
I think he's a classic case of a guy who needed a change in scenery. Just his whole attitude about coming here, on top of taking a major pay cut for a year so he could prove himself again, on top of his play during the 8 starts he got here. He just seems determined to regain his rookie form. It's exciting, really. Plus, as far as goalies go, I'd say he's still a couple years away from the start of the average goalie's prime. Hopefully.just like with LSchenn, Columbus just dealt with his growing pains, and we'll get to reap the benefits of that next season as he comes back into form.

Is he responsible on D? I've been hearing the opposite.
