I get that Gardiner can replace Fransons vision and a couple other aspects but I don't see either one of them being redundant because of the other.
Its like saying we dont need Lupul because we have JVR, who plays a similar style.
Keepng both is a positive for this team. Id be looking to replace Gunnarsson, Liles and Obyrne.
We need a number 2 with Phaneuf.

i'd keep gunnar, have him play with gardiner. gives him so stability there. find someone to play with phaneuf, fraser plays with someone on the 3rd pair (don't know who that will be, but we can't pay franson 4 mil+ and liles 4mil, cause one will be sitting every game, most likely liles)

Wonder what happened to Romero? Just a complete 180 from him from his first 2 or 3 years.
- weirdoh

Pitching with an injury for half a season probably screwed his delivery up.

He'll get a 2 year contract at 3-3.5M/per, or Nonis will sign him to a long-term at 4-4.5M/per. But yes, he's easily worth that 4.5M. Him playing with Fraser really helped his game. I remember at the beginning of the year Franny wasn't too much into the physical aspect but 20 games in and he's finishing checks and working the boards.
He's my secret love, I think he should be paired with Phaneuf.

Gunnar, Kule/Frattin, 21st overall for either a top ten pick or a #1C

- optimus-reim

you think franson can be a top pairing guy? i think thats pushing it. and if he plays with fraser, fraser isn't a top 4 dman, meaning you are paying franson 4.5 mil to play on the 3rd pair. whats the point?

You probably should have kept that to yourself. It's not a secret any more.

how? buy him out? its a waste to use one on him. save them to pick up a bad contract and get a top prospect with it.

Dont think you'll be seeing deals like this again.

Why would a teams get rid of a top prospect, just to get rid of a bad contract, when they can use a buyout on them?

Liles won't be a Leaf for much longer, I don't think.
We can trade him, I bet. Just as an offload to somewhere. Anywhere.
If not, we can by him out.
I don't mind what you got there. I'd be okay with paying Franson that much. And the rest of it. But I'd still rather have Franson than Gunnar.
And if you're looking for a 3rd pairing, I'd be okay with bringing back Obyrne

i wasn't to happy with o'byrne's play in the playoffs, especially considering he had more experience then most of our dman. if we can deal liles i'd be fine with keeping franson, but i still would prefer trying to sell high on one of our players for once

Not sure if you heard, but...

1. Tampa is probably going to buy him out.

2. There's a new CBA..

again, if we can i am open to dealing liles and replacing his cap with franson, but for once we have the chance to sell high on a player considering he's only had 1 good season so far. we have other needs, and franson + could help fill those

But if the Leafs trade away all their young guys that show a bit of talent but are still developing, the team will be left with guys like Liles who are over the hill.

Have you been living under a rock the past season?

They dont need deep pockets with the new CBA.

i get what you are saying but i think this is a different situation. if we have the chance to move up in this deep draft by pairing franson and the 21st, then its something nonis should consider. also, if we just trade franson and maybe frattin/scrivens, it won't be for an old player, it will be a young player who can still grow with the team.

also, carlyle kept fowler after his draft year, and possibly would have kept rielly this year if not for the shortened training camp. who says rielly doesn't make the team out of camp? then what happens?

I don't disagree with this. I'm sure Nonis is considering all possible moves. But if they do move up to draft a center there is no guarantee he will play for the Leafs in the next 2 or 3 years and the Leafs will have to replace Franson. If they plan on trading Liles and they don't bring back O'byrne they will have to play Kostka and Holzer again or bring in someone else. There is no guarantee Rielly will make it this year. I just don't think the Leafs have much depth at defense right now. Maybe they will keep the 21st pick and draft a defenseman. I have no idea what Nonis will do but it will be interesting to see what happens.

it really depends on how far they can move up, or what young center might be available. i know it isn't guaranteed that rielly will play, but i dont see the need to draft a defense when we have rielly, percy, finn, blacker all still developing. a forward should be our main priority at the draft.
