Gomez would be a joke... Briere had like 2 seasons around 30 goals/ 70 points. Just saying for his contract coming off 90 point season I expected much much more. I agree his signing was Right move at the time but I'm sure Philly is disappointed in what they got from him. Again I don't blame him totally but I'm hoping g doesn't do same thing. 1 90 point season then sign 6/7 million dollar deal and only put up like 70 points a year. In cap world paying 6/7 a year long term you need much much more

In terms of dollar for on ice production, Briere was overpaid. (Not by much if you factor in the playoffs). However, he provided the team with exactly what they needed. Offensive production and leadership. Sometimes you need to overpay. They just did the same thing with Streit. They needed a puck mover who could run the PP after Kimmo leaves. They overpaid, but it's because they felt they had to.

I don't think the Flyers are disappointed in what they got from Briere. He was a huge part in pretty much all of the seven playoff series they won during his time with the team, had a pair of 30+ goal seasons and three 25+ goal seasons in mostly a second-line role.

Bill,
If Poile is the GM for the US in Sochi as has been reported, does the Weber offer sheet affect Homer's standing on the selection committee? I can't imagine that would be a comfortable dynamic.

He's Taiwanese-American. Just like you wouldn't be wrong if you referred to Lin as Taiwanese or American -- he identifies with both equally -- you wouldn't be wrong if you referred to Barkov as either Russian or Finnish, since he's Russian-Finnish. He wouldn't hold dual citizenship if he didn't identify strongly with being Russian.

I wouldn't refer to him as Taiwanese, I'd refer to him as an American of Taiwanese descent. It's the same with Barkov. His dad is Russian, and he might have some family in Russia, but from there it's all Finn. And while I'm sure he's an exception, many Finns dislike Russia. Every Finn I've ever known dislikes Russians. It's entirely possible that he owns a dual citizenship because his parents wanted him to have one, and he doesn't actually identify that strongly with being Russian.

Hey Bill,
Did anyone in the media ask Briere if the Flyers asked to him to accept a trade to another team?

I don't think he'd answer that. I think he'd probably side step it saying he didn't want to discuss things like that.

Glen Macnow did on WIP yesterday. Briere said no, they had more respect then to do that.

Nowadays if you can pay a guy $6M/per and he scores 70pts a year, that's a steal.

Whatever they self-identify as, in Finland, I'm sure they know Barkov as "that Russian kid playing for Tappara" just like in the US, people tend to refer to Lin as "that Chinese NBA player".

They paid him like a first line center. He produced more along the lines of a second line center. Obviously not steadily. There were times when he was the best center. There were times when he was the third best.
