I think he could end up being the star of this draft. If the Lightning didn't need D or an elite winger for Stamkos so desperately, he's the guy I'd want.

In 5 years, the cap will be like 80 million and our farm system stocked with young studs. In 5 years, 7.7 mil will be pretty much average for a guy like Vinny. Don't forget where Yzerman wants this team to be in the future: a fast skating (youth youth youth) hardworking (couple thumpers) skilled (stammer, drouin) team with good leadership (vinny). St Louis will have retired. Other big contract will be gone and Yzerman will depend on his farm system to fill out the lines. I doubt TB will ever be in the market for big time FA. Detroit never really was. Detroit always drafts and develops great players that just seem to seamlessly slide into the lineup. Thats what Yzerman wants. Stammer and Vinny will be rocks in centers for years to come. Hedman and Carle on D. Vasilevski in net. You guys think the farm system is nice now? Wait until after this year's draft. Al Murray knows what he's doing

Flat out right now all that matter is that this team has Stamkos, possibly the best player in the entire league and is only 23. You also have Hedman on your Defense and you have a top 3 pick this year.

No one else on the entire team is untradable or as important as building the best team around those players as humanly possible. You may never get a player as good as Stamkos again in 100 years and I don't care how good Vinny is, his contract sucks and you buy him out so you can have money to sign depth players to support those 3 in the playoffs when you are fighting for a Cup.

Vinny the benefits of keeping Vinny are far outweighed by the threat of his contract bogging down this team when it really matters in 3-4 years and Stamkos is in his prime (if he isn't already, SCARY!)

The compliance buyout was a gift from the hockey gods created specifically for players with terrible contracts like Vinny. Take it and move on your way.
