Speaking of the Avs I think it's painfully obvious Sakic and Roy are trying to re-create the Lindros trade with Seth Jones. Look how well that overpayment worked out for their franchise in the 90's.

I doubt they think they will get the same type of return but yea, I think they are trying to make Florida sweat and trade up to #1.

Russo reports that the Wild might be in the mix dealing away Clutterbuck or Konopka.

I'd have interest in both.

LeBrun reporting the Flyers I guess are still in on Bernier, but will only buy out Bryzgalov if they have a plan B to fall back on (as we all kind of know)

I've been thinking about Vinny from Tampa if he is bought out.

Konopka as our 4C would be nice. Tough as nails, great on faceoffs, great guy in the locker room and community. A 4th line of Clutterbuck-Konopka-Rinaldo would drive other teams nuts!

I agree. But we were tied for 2nd most PP goals, 9th in goals per game, and 9th in total goals. So for G to be so far out of the top is an indicator of something. Bad year? Perhaps. Or he doesn't perform well under the focus of top defenders? Or he needs a certain type of talent on his line to perform at a top level?

In no way am I bashing G's potential, but with all the talk about his upcoming contract, he's going to have to do a bit more before I see him as one of the elite players in the league.

This upcoming season is going to be a real good test for G, Homer, Lavy, and the team direction as a whole.

over a full season. assuming health, what kind of totals do you project for Giroux as far as goals and assists go?

30 60 90. I'd hope. Anything less would be a disappointing IMO, and I think he could easily hit 100 and then some on a good year.

id agree with all of this. if he is the player that people are expecting him to be, then i think any point total that doesnt start with a 9 is disappointing. i think the g a split will be similar to that as well

Yes, it's a good team stat, but it's a very flawed individual stat. Paul Coffey was a horrible defensive player. He finished a +294 in his career. Meanwhile Dave Babych, who was a very solid defenseman, ended up a -223 over his, spent mostly with far less talented teams than Coffey did.

It's not the stat that is flawed. It is the interpretation of the stat that is sometimes flawed.

That's not such a ringing endorsement of Giroux per se. He was outside the Top 60 in goals last season. And assists are dependent upon teammates finishing the play. Also, there's no distinction between first and second assist. And Giroux was definitely part of the reason the team struggled to score at even strength.

Hopefully he snaps out of the funk that plagued him and the team this past season.

His goals were down slightly, but Giroux is always going to rack up more assists then goals. And his goal total still projected to 22. That's not awful. Secondly, there is reason why player like Giroux consistently rack up high assist totals. It's not because he plays with teammates who are great finishers. It's because he makes plays. Simple as that. There doesn't need to be a distinction between first and second assists. And lastly, with the way the Flyers played last year, their transition game stunk. Which meant that the Flyers didn't generate a lot of odd man rushes and counter attacks. Constantly having to go the length of the ice against full checking. For Giroux to still produce as he did. Pretty dam good.

Reflections OR an indictment...

Awful article. Cobb should stick to football. It's a very incomplete article that misses the boat on a number of issues. As does the comments by Seravalli. Lacks perspective and understanding of the proccess that the Flyers are going through in building a team.

Cobb is misleading, he makes no mention of the fact the cap was artificially reduced. You cant indict the team for cap management issues without putting it in context. Cobb fails miserably in this regard.

Failed to take into account the artificial lowering of the Salary cap. And failed to put the Flyers current team as a work in progress from the drastic about face they made after going to the Cup Finals, and then making drastic changes to the roster. Context is everything.
