The decision to move Richards, Carter, JvR, and Lupul were all partly driven by those odious contract extensions... in Richards/Carter case, the moves were partly necessitated by the Bryzgalov signing, and Lupul had to go because they had to lose salary to make room for Pronger. I strongly doubt they would have considered dealing JvR if he had a more palatable cap-hit, even to bring in defensive help.

- Tomahawk

Some facts here not in evidence here. I agree completely that contract considerations were a part of it. The genesis of the Richards/Carter trades was that they changed their minds on going forward with building the team around those 2 players. Both contracts for Richards and Carter were very good contracts. Both players are well worth their Cap hits. But with NTCs kicking in, the Flyers were going to be limited somewhat. They also lacked draft picks and prospects at the time. Those trades took away those issues.
As far as Lupul is concerned. He wasn't a throw in for salary reasons. He was part of the cost of obtaining Pronger. He wasn't included for Cap reasons.
And are you saying that the FLyers made the Schenn trade because of JVR's Cap hit? That's a huge stretch, and really there isn't anything to support that. The difference in Cap hits between JVR and Schenn is 650K. They made that trade because they needed a defenseman, and it was a good fit for the club. That trade was absolutely not Cap driven.

Now there's talk of dumping Meszaros and/or Coburn, two young dmen that were considered core players just 6-18 months ago, to help make room for Streit.

Umberger and Upshall, members of the original rebuild core, were purely lost due to cap constraints.

- Tomahawk

Meszaros and Coburn aren't that young. And you don't even know what's going to happen, or who they're going to be traded for. So a little premature to criticize, on moves that haven't even happened yet.
Umberger was traded for a first round pick. Which turned into Sbisa. Which helped get Pronger. Good move.
Scottie Upshall's best point production since leaving the Flyers has been 34 points I beleive. Not a big loss there. And let's clarify, that was a choice that the Flyers made. They were not forced to trade him.

That's a lot of young talent going out the door. Luckily, they were able to transition to a younger core through some of those trades, but I really don't have much confidence that the Flyers will ever be able to keep a core together for very long with the way they keep chasing after each and every big-$ player on the market.

- Tomahawk

Carter and Richards netted Couturier, Simmonds, Voracek, Cousins, and Schenn. That's a lot of young talent that came in from those trades. So your point of a lot of young talent going out the door there, isn't very valid. And they brought in 4 players that were younger, and a good prospect .

Umberger netted Sbisa originally. Again younger.

Wasn't crazy about the Upshall trade because it also included giving up a 2nd rounder. But really not much of a loss there. And would you be okay with Upshall at 3.5M right now?

So to summarize, stating that a lot of young talent is going out the door, is an extreme exaggeration.

I had a feeling yesterday Toews would have a super game.
He is an all out leader and great player.
Watching him vs Bergeron has made this a stellar series.
Also it seems like there is a bit less embellishing going on this year.

I wonder what Leddy would cost?

Flyers, if they get him, would really have improved the puck moving side of their D by adding him and Streit and if Gusty steps into a full time role.

Maybe swinging the pendulum too far from defensive D?

- Marc D

Yeah, Gustafsson's potential role could be affected (if he's not included in a deal for Leddy).

But I think Leddy could be a guy who could take a lot of pressure off of Timonen this season, and help cushion his departure in subsequent seasons.

They are both very similar players. I watch a lot of hawks games and I think an uninjured Gus could be just as good as leddy. Jmo.

I wouldn't like the mix of defense with Gustafsson, Streit, and Leddy in there. Rather just role with Gustafsson then to trade assets for Leddy.

Leddy is a player you might bring in to take the role that Streit is going to have. Not as even a partial replacement for Timonen. Not that kind of player.

I'd like to see what Gus can do in a legitimate defensive rotation before shuttling him anywhere. I just hope he can stay healthy enough.

He's as ready as he's ever gonna be and if, as fans, we are clamoring for the Flyers to develop guys....well, we have one that's ready.

Alternatively, I do recognize a tendency for some sports fans (this isn't germane to hockey) to fall in love with everyone else's players and prospects and to look down on your own.

It's funny because I was thinking an uninjured Mezsaros could fill a role like Boychuk does on the Bruins.

I've been really impressed with Boychuk's game.

You're right. I could have sworn that Leddy played PK minutes for the Hawks.

Yeh, that is what I meant about the pendulum swinging too far away from defensive D men.

You need a mix.

I think having a good skating, good passing puck mover on each pair is pretty essential.

The lone exception probably being Eagles fans...at least until the first 5 minutes of the season opener.

I really hope they find a way to keep Read.

He is the kind of smart, two way role player teams need to win a cup. Scores goals, is fast, plays up and down the line up.

Look at what Paille is bringing to the Bruins.

That said, if they trade him to improve a need I am OK with it.
Just hope that it works out well for both teams kind of like the JvR for Luke Schenn deal (so far), because Read is going to help whatever team he is on.

Yeah...

Cracks me up that a contestant eventually used his answer for final Jeopady years later.

Prediction: Briere and Bryz both end up on the Islanders, and yet another Flyer duo is the last piece to a team's puzzle brings the Islanders their first cup since '83.
