Exactly. I think the only "core" guy we've lost due to the cap was Umberger after his crazy Montreal playoff. But yeah, Briere/Hartnell were "core" guys when we acquired them, now they're just (or, were) very good supporting players.

Again. Depends. What about Richards and Carter?

Any reason Homer didn't wait until it can be official?

Maybe he's letting Briere talk to other teams now as a courtesy?

Anyone know if there is a stream for the press conference? Living on the west coast has it's downfalls

I'd say they were core players through to when we traded them. The distinction I would make is that we didn't 'lose' them, we just traded them for what seems (imo) to be good value.

What a game last night. Those guys went all Flyers Penguins for a night.

Toews is a stud, battling big Z tooth and nail all game.
Sharp and Zeus looked great again.
Heck of a finals.
Any interest in Leddy?

It might be a good move for him. It lets teams know that yes, it is happening so they can begin to think about what they would offer him in free agency. Allows him to get better potential offers / faster when the buyout can be offical.
I think it's a classy move by the organization.

2 years 4M seems OK, but they have to wait until they figure out where they are going with the goalie and if there are other forwards they like more.

Gagne is being "Carled" this off season, has to wait and see. I guess someone else could sign him while the Flyers are Richardering around, it is a risk, but not the worst thing if they don't resign him.

I'd be happy with 2/4mil. I hope that they bring him back, not only would I love to see Gags retire a flyer but I think having his veteran presence around could really help the young core. Even more so now that Briere definitely won't be back.

They were traded. They weren't cap issues. Depending on who you ask/believe, they were done for hockey or locker room issues.

Agree, I think he is a very good complement on a wing with Couts.
He was at times this year their most positionally sound forward.
He still can skate.
Biggest fear is he is so fragile.

Looking forward to Bill's take on this.
From what I've read Vigneault was their first choice.

The decision to move Richards, Carter, JvR, and Lupul were all partly driven by those odious contract extensions... in Richards/Carter case, the moves were partly necessitated by the Bryzgalov signing, and Lupul had to go because they had to lose salary to make room for Pronger. I strongly doubt they would have considered dealing JvR if he had a more palatable cap-hit, even to bring in defensive help.

Now there's talk of dumping Meszaros and/or Coburn, two young dmen that were considered core players just 6-18 months ago, to help make room for Streit.

Umberger and Upshall, members of the original rebuild core, were purely lost due to cap constraints.

That's a lot of young talent going out the door. Luckily, they were able to transition to a younger core through some of those trades, but I really don't have much confidence that the Flyers will ever be able to keep a core together for very long with the way they keep chasing after each and every big-$ player on the market.

The RFA deals for Schenn and Couts (assuming they aren't traded) will be a good test to see if things are improving contract wise.

If they give those guys JvR type deals and not a lesser $, shorter bridge type deal I will be disappointed.

I like Homer, but agree that the way the team has handled the salary cap has been a learning process, and that may be kind.

People yesterday (prior to the game) were talking about Toews' perceived "struggles" in the playoffs this year, and especially this series. But he has been a beast.

Definite interest in Leddy.

I had a feeling yesterday Toews would have a super game.
He is an all out leader and great player.
Watching him vs Bergeron has made this a stellar series.
Also it seems like there is a bit less embellishing going on this year.

I wonder what Leddy would cost?

Flyers, if they get him, would really have improved the puck moving side of their D by adding him and Streit and if Gusty steps into a full time role.

Maybe swinging the pendulum too far from defensive D?
