I don't see how Gardiner gets that much.
Does NJ who lacks d even give their 9th? |

6 months ago leafs fans would've dealt him for a water bottle. Now he's worth a top 5 pick. Yikers. Gardiner will likely top out as a #3D. Those aren't more valuable than 1Cs like Monahan and Lindholm. |

No kidding. If you look back on the late 90's teams, led offensively by Weight,Guerin,Smyth etc, the team worked hard, didn't score a tonne of goals, but hit everything that moved and were very tough to play against. The bottom 6 were loaded with smart, fast hitters (variations of Moreau/Marchant/Grier & Dowd/Devereux/Laraque- with a smattering of similar players rotating around the line up). There was no 2nd line whatsoever, just miscast bottom 6'ers doing their best to help out the few weopons we had (Guys like Rem Murray,Dan Cleary come to mind).
The Defence was always a 3 headed monster it seemed as well, once Hamrlik,Mironov and Ninnimaa were established, and as we lost one, there was always someone coming in to replace (Brewer/Smith).
My point in all of this is the very elements we lacked back in those days (High end offensive talent) is our only abundance today, and the 90's seems like an embarrassment of riches in the bottom 6 and on D today.
People say the bottom six will be easy to get, but Sather worked very hard, for a very long time to put those grinders together. Are we going to find a young Moreau,Marchant and Grier in free agency?Nope. Sather had to trade MacTavish, Mironov and Grier was part of a package that cost us two first round picks.
After all this Malarkey, I guess I just feel that we know what we have in Horcoff (a decent 3rd line C), and now we go into the draft and free agency with a very big hole to fill. - Jeropotato
Very well written post... I agree... |

Absolutely untrue. No one ever wanted him traded for a water bottle (unless it were Oiler fans that wanted to give up just a water bottle). ESPECIALLY 6 months ago. That was before the season even started, and he was the next Lidstrom to some Leaf fans. Even mid-season, when he was in the AHL, most were pissed, and that was mostly because they felt he should be with the team, and the only reason he was kept down was contractual (and that pissed people off).
That said, Gardiner for a 7th overall and PRV isn't realistic. I'd say the 7th or 9th straight up is probably more realistic, in terms of value. He's not worth one of those top 5 elite guys. The guys outside that group, seems pretty close in terms of value to me. That said, the Leafs probably wouldn't entertain the idea of trading him, and shifting back a few years in terms of development. Because that's really what it would be. Trading in a young guy, for a very young guy (with pretty similar upside), really just moves them back on the development time period a few years. It's not like trading a player because you're losing him, or going for a youth movement. He's a kid as it is. |

2014 and PRV might make more sense (than mentioned above), as it likely won't be as high as 7th, in a probably a weaker draft.

TO definitely shouldn't trade Gardiner, not because of development, because of their defensive depth. Worst defence of any playoff team.
Elias Lindholm had an NHLE of 40 points this year. He's absloutely fall to 7, and he'll absolutely develop in to a stud 1C. What TO needs. |

No poop. I still have some faith that MacT has a deal in place to move Hemmer and Horc. I can almost garauntee neither will be bought out. Here's my Guesses:
Horcoff: Detroit,Florida,Dallas,Anaheim or Toronto
Hemsky: Florida,Ottawa,Columbus,NYI or Nashville.
Returns? 3rd rounders, Over paid bottom 6 D, Bottom 6 forwards. |

If the Leafs can't re-sign Bozak, can't find another centre, I can see Komisarek for Horcoff.
Both are problem contracts, but the other team would each have more of a use for those problems than the other. that said, three years left for Horcoff, one for Komi. Might take a sweetener. |
