Probably around $1.5 million if LA were to bring him back. I don't think he wants to back up anymore though so I think he'd sign an offer sheet before accepting a qualifying offer.
- NickTheKid87

In terms of cap,I think I would rather have Bernier at 1.5-2M than Read at 4-4.5M

Sounds like someone is falling into the trap of misconceptions. He's a good 2nd line player.

If they choose to bring back Bryzgalov, I'd hope to see them go after Hiller in 2014 free agency (assuming Anaheim let's him walk). I'd rather not make a trade for Hiller but I'd consider Halak if the price was right. Preferably I'd want a FA goalie this year if Bryz is bought out. Bernier would be my second option but obviously they'll have to decide on him before free agency.
- NickTheKid87

I actually like the idea of getting either Thomas or Backstrom. You can get off offering both those guys 1 year deals because of thier age, and next years goalie FA looks much better. I know a lot of these guys wont hit the market, but at least a couple will. Lundquist, Miller, Hiller, Halak, Howard... plus more. Plus it also gives you the option of keeping Mason if he works out. If you trade for Hiller or Halak, then your basically only giving Mason 1 year.

Couturier and Schenn need to take a step forward.
- johndewar

Without a doubt. They are at the point where they are going to need to be relied on and not just chip in.

So I'm skimming this while at work and honestly couldn't figure out who this goalie Jake Bobby was...

And Hartnell had a poor year last year. If he can get back to his form 2 years ago, we should be in pretty good shape offensively if the younger players take a step forward this season.
- funmaster18

I'm as excited as anyone else to see a Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier break out! If these 2 get going, forget about any big name around the league. These 2 will become big names. In my opinion Brayden Schenn is more likely to break up muh quicker then Couturier. I'm very excited for Brayden Schenn this season.

For the record, I am on board with a Bryz buyout. Frees up a lot of cap space now and in the future and his play hasn't been to the level where the Flyers need to keep him. My main concern is what is the plan if he's bought out. There's no name out there that screams sure fire to me, though I'd have some interest in Halak if he can be had cheap since he only has 1 year remaining on his deal. Bernier could be nice, but I really don't know what to expect from him and I'm not sure what it will take to have him.
- funmaster18

Those options are more sure-fire than Bryz. You're not going to have a guy that'll be a certainty. I think there will be plenty of options if he's bought out, both via trade and free agency. The only issue is that if they don't have a replacement in place before buying out Bryz, they may lose a lot of leverage.

I assume that the Flyers have already considered what he's going to be making in the next few years and whether or not he'll fit.

If that's the conclusion, then so be it. But he'd very helpful on the team this upcoming season if the goals are high.

- bradleyc4

If possible, Read needs to remain a Flyer. What he brings vs his cap hit, in a year where the cap is going down, is invaluable. I would save him unless the deal he's involved in brings back an immediate impact player for a few years to come. I wouldn't trade him for a roll of the dice on Bernier. Granted, I don't know enough about Bernier to make an informed decision.

It would behoove Brayden Schenn, financially speaking, to have a big year next year.

Backstrom might be a little too pricey but if Thomas or Emery wanted to come here for a year, I'd be open to it. Also Khudobin.

If Couturier can be the defensive madman he was his rookie year, then I can be patient with his offense. I think Schenn will also break out sooner rather than later. Last year was tough for everyone.

This year though, Read will only be $900,000. It might be best to deal him now because they may not be able to keep him in the future.

The Flyers almost have no leverage as it is. Every team in the NHL knows a buyout of Bryz is a possibility. That's why I am concerned about what it will take to get someone else. FA might be the best way to go unless they believe a guy like Bernier can be their man for years to come.

Which is why I'm not opposed to moving him. I like Read, but you have to sell high when you can, especially if he's going to be tough to fit into future plans.
- flyguy12

Yeah, Stajan, Hagman and White were all viewed as versatile, solid, two-way NHL contributors with some upside when they were dealt for Dion Phaneuf... selling high at its finest.

They need to do what they need to do to get up in the top 5 and get Nichushkin. Trade a roster player, #11 and something next year and get this kid.

But then you need to replace him, which will cost more $. He could be used at the TDL if the year is a flop or they need to get over the hump. He could be attractive then. He's a guy I wouldn't mind dealing heading into the POs if the Flyers are in a position to make a run since it would be tough to resign him next year anyway. Like I said, I don't know enough about Bernier though to say whether or not Read is worthing trading for him.

Bernier is medium risk, high reward while an FA goalie is more low risk, medium reward. I would take a guy like Emery for 2 years/$6 million even over Bryzgalov for 7 more years with a $5.6m cap hit. If you have to overpay a tad than so be it.
