Based on his injury history, I don't have an issue with wanting to keep Coburn over him. But stating this is a business, and that he's gotten shelled. Not accurate.
I like Coburn and want the Flyers to keep him. But he doesn't have a unique skillset. In fact, Meszaros has a better skill set then Coburn does.

That's fine. I prefer Coburn's skill set. I understand both sides.

If jvr has no chemistry with giroux, why would Ryan? These guys are basically the same player. Didn't we just dump this player last summer for a stay at home dman? Now we do the reverse trade this summer for a guy with a bigger cap hit?

It's so (frank)ing flyerrific

- Just5

I think that's simplifying it way too much. How many players did JVR have chemistry with here at all? It's clear the trade lit a fire under his butt that had not been there before. I dont think Ryan would have trouble playing with any top line Center.

Skills are fine, but I don't see him as an overly smart player. I realize I'm coming off as a hater, and you make a really good point. I wouldn't bank on him in my top four, and I don't prefer an injury prone $4M man on the third pair.

I just think he'll be leaving shortly. Time will tell.

- cmr.266

I would actually be surprised if he makes it past the trade deadline in a flyers sweater.
The real issue is, who replaces him, in terms of skill from a FA for less money?

This is the real problem when people want to trade d men.
We let carle walk and couldn't replace him. And I hated carle, but that was a me problem.
We are paying mark street 5m a year until his hip gives out.
D men cost a lot for less return.
You have a way better shot at replacing a forward for a lower cap hit and equal play than a d man.

Agreed also Ryan has much better hands than JVR...JVR is a park in front of the net and bang home rebounds kind of player. Ryan can take it up the ice and score.

Of course, the one problem with skill is it means squat in the press box.
I would love to see them just rotate kimo, mez, and gus through them line up. Play 6 games, get a rest whether u are injured or not.

Gustafsson for a full year? And they probably sign someone - someone better than Gervais, Foster, or Lilja - for depth. Maybe even a Keith Ballard after he's amnestied. That'd be my guess.

Timonen, Coburn (barring a trade), Streit, Gross, Schenn, Gustafsson, new guy (e.g. Ballard)

They can even bury Gervais in AHL if needed since his salary is below the threshold.

I personally think the Flyers have too much money tied up in their defensive core. They need to find some cheap guys on the third pairing. Gustafsson is one they could use another who is solid defensively.

Paying Mez, Coburn, Timonen, Schenn, and Grossmann some big coin. Its nice that they have talent on the backend but it doesn't seem to mesh with what they are trying to do as a team.

$10.825 coming off the books after this season, but I agree with you.

so this is what it is like to be able to watch a helter skelter scoring game with goals left and right and not have a heart attack while simultaneously cursing at the TV?

this game is awesome. must be like how the rest of the league feels watching the penguins and flyers in the playoffs. although i dont know how to explain it. yeah there are tons of goals being put up, and the frantic pace, but yet i just dont feel that the blaring incompetence/disregard for defense is there. just good hockey from both ends resulting in lots of chances and an exciting watch

JVR had a solid Season, but it wasn't anything special. But he cooled off in the2nd half. He scored 4 goals in the last 22 games.

I'm never in favor of that. Best players should play. Shouldn't sit out unless there is an injury.

That was an awesome 2nd period. 3rd period should be great. Boston has to rediscover it's checking game.

i still think the jury is still way too far out to beat yourself up over that trade. schenn has already paid dividents, and as far as JVR goes, its only natural to expect the additional top line minutes and relative good health to provide an uptick in his stats

Trust me, I'm not beating myself up over the trade. I love the trade. Luke Schenn is going to be a big player for the Flyers.

Gonna be really interesting to see how Lombardi fills out his forwards with the Kings. No wonder he contacted Homer about Bernier looking for young, cheap forward help.

I think Lombardi has to deal Bernier no later then at the draft. Whatever small leverage he has will all but eliminated after the draft. There is just no way they could match an OS for Bernier, unless of course Lombardi buys someone out.
