Burns is a forward.

Sucks at D.

Burns was a centreman and played defense as well in junior but has been a d-man his entire NHL career and no, he does not suck at D.

Is that why the Shark played him as a forward ?

average salary cap hit of $5.76M

Got 20 points in 23 games as a forward ( not bad I agree .

It's not the first time he got switched from D to O.

At that cap hit, I wouldn't touch him.

This model would be fine if Habs had a first line that was reliable and unstoppable (a la Sedin or Crosby, etc.) Habs don't have this and must rely on scoring by committee (a la Boston). They tried the hybrid of no superstar and your model in the 90s and 00s and it didn't work, so they need to go with this one:

1st line: Scoring (Galchenyuk)
2nd line: Scoring (Pacioretty-Plekanec-Gallagher)
3rd line: Support Scoring with a strong defensive game (Bourque-Eller-Gionta)
4th line: Energy line built with young players that also plays an important shut-down role. (Prust-White-Dumont)
Somewhere in a black hole: Desharnais, Moen

This isn't straying far from what I said. Habs need another scoring threat on the top line. Elias, Jagr as a fill in for a season or two wouldn't be a bad thing. Habs aren't going to turn heads in the Playoffs next year either

Montreal isnt a Top 5-10 team, though the draft says we are, but did you see how an Ordinary team like the Senators emarrassed the Habs?? Drafting so low really hurts this team, as they have so many weaknesses, especially if you consider Softies Plekanec and Desharnais will still e the teams top 2 centers for Three More Years !! Yikes!!

Can the Habs "Replicate" what they did in last years 48 games into a full season?? Sure, and with Plekanec and Desharnais as their Top2 centers,, another First round exit..
